I ’M sure th e re ’s som e th in g o f a poser in all o f us. And that’s what
makes the profes sional’s shop at any golf club, or any of the ever-increasing band of discount golf stores, such a trea
sure trove. Among the very bright
est of games — no golfer wants to pale in to the background and run the risk of collecting a Titleist on the hack of the head — the clothing department of any golf shop can he a dazzling place to visit. And so those interested
in having the man in their life — whether father,

seemingly essential item in everyone’s wardrobe is
the “loud” sweater. In recent years these
have gone from the “no dad, not me dad” variety handed out at Christmas — usually by the elder sister or' mother-in-law! — to some great designs which have made manu facturers like Pringle, Lyle and Scott, Kintyre, Glenmuir and Jaeger

son, husband, boyfriend, boss or brother — some thing special for Christ mas could do far worse than visit their local golf professional or head for a golf store. The great thing about
the fashions which adorn the fairways and club houses of golf courses across the globe is that you don’t have to have the slightest interest in golf to follow them. The explosion of style
and colour of recent years had made g o l f gea r among the most popular leisure-wear as followers of the game copy their heroes while others cash- in on the quality, style,
comes a range of T-shirts, trousers and even socks __ all of which have an excellent range of style, colours and prices — and allow that most dedicated follow of fashion to wear his favourite brand name as far down as his feet! Again, you don’t have
to display the slightest interest in the Royal and Ancient game to look forward to opening par cels containing any of these on Christmas
morning. The pro’s shop or goll
discount store will also offer items of great use to other sportsmen. Caps, hats, waterproof
suits, handwarmers and shoe bags have all found favour with the bowling community — ample enough proof about the state of the usual Last Lancashire summer. But it’s golfers who
really enjoy themselves in a pro’s shop or at the dis count store.

facturers than most peo ple can hope to remember the names of and it’s not unusual to find a golf shop with anything up to 50 d i f fe r en t putters to choose from. Those on the hunt for
Chrjstmas treats need not, however, be daunted by the prospect of the financial implications or visiting their local golf emporium. Stocking-fillers range
from just a couple of pounds for gilts sets of tee pegs, pitch mark repairers and ball mark ers, to just over a fiver for three good golf balls or a new golf glove. Just up the range are a wide choice of books and
videos. Every golfer likes to
think he could — if he really, really tried and, of course, someone showed

the golf course is also picked out in a selection of “ It’ll-be alright on the
night” style tapes and in a huge range of books. So th e re ’ s a great
chance of letting the Christmas pudding settle while the housebound golfer on your Christmas shopping list watches Nick Faldo in tears after winning the Open, Jozc Maria Olazabal dance on the green as Europe retain the Ryder Cup — or a home-video clipping of Joe Public teeing-off and watching in horror as the ball hits something and comes Hying back to catch him squarely in the unmentionables! little more to spend or on the lookout for a special treat can buy golf bags for under £20 — or for anything up to £150 — while sets of matching clubs or one-offs can cost as little or as much as you are willing to spend. Other items like head-

when there were just a couple of different sets of golf clubs to chose from and when you wanted a new driver the pro simply said: “Here it is.” Now the manufacturers
really are making golf the boom game of the decade. There’s a mind-bog-

thinks he has everything may well welcome a hip flask — and a bottle of the necessary! — or a win dp roo f c ig a re t te lighter . . . two absolute essentials as far as I m
concerned. East Lancashire is well
served by a number of club professionals and a growing number of golf
discount stores. But if the golfer in your
life has had a bad year, there’s another big treat you could buy him for
Christmas. All the local profes
sionals offer one-off les sons or courses of tuition — booking those by way of a Chrsitmas present could be a great way to make sure that your
favourite golfer not only enjoys his hobby, but also stands a better chance of bringing home some great prizes when the new sea son gets underway! Or if you think his skills
are likely to get a bit rusty during the winter — why not send him to one of the local golf driv ing ranges as a special seasonal treat. Gone are the days
when all you could do was buy a golfer three golf bails, a novelty tec peg holder or a red v-neck saweater for Christmas. The vast array of options available mean
that it should be almost impossible to draw a blank when calling in at the g o lf shop of your
choice. Even i f you have to
brighten up a dull year on the local fairways for the target of your affections by buying him his very own trophy!
