coffee morning on September H)th, a t St Mary’s Church Hall, from 10 to 11-20 a.m. In a d d it io n to re fre s hm e n ts there is a cakes and savouries s ta ll, ra ffle , ja rb o la and a “granny's attic” selling bric-a- brac and nearly new items.

Worthwhile A fter a very wet start, Sab
den Country Market turned in to a g re a t success. The clouds gave way to a warm sunny nay and crowds of visi tors came along. Some stall holders had second thoughts because of the early morning rain, but almost 100 others turned out, including a num ber o f Sabden organisations, which had a worthwhile day. All the money raised by the
organising Holme Committee goes back to Sabden in the tonn o f community events. Chairman Mrs Eileen Lowe
said: “We were really pleased by the number o f people who came along and we thank Sab den people for putting up with the (lisruption for the day.”

People are being asked well in advance i f they have any item s , larg e o r small, excluding clothing, to donate to the auction. Items can be sold on a f>()/f>0

Not busy enough The County Council has
turned down Salxlen Parish Council’s request for sleeping policemen on Stuhbins Lane to slow down traffic. A t the parish council, mem
bers heard th a t checks had been made on the road and It was not felt sufficiently busy to warrant speed deterrents. Police reports also confirmed that there had been no acci dents there during the last five years. The county council will con
tinue to monitor the situation to set; i f any future action is necessary. Sabden’s “ rose gard e n ” ,

Muriel Kay was the speaker
at the Ebenezer Baptist Social Hour in Billington, on Tues day evening. .She described family life in “ The Manse,” relating many things which happened to her during the va r io u s m in is t r ie s o f her father, the Rev. Harry Kay, a Baptist minister. In the f irs t world war he
ended his ministry in Stnin- clil’fe, Yorkshire, to take up the pastorate o f Hartlepool Baptist Church, which had been destroyed by the drop ping o f a German Zeppelin. He was responsible for the rebuilding ol the church hut, in the meantime, services were held in the town hall. Miss Kay described his
work among the fishermen’s families ami told how *11) of them would come to worship wearing th e ir blue jumpers, keeping their tiny New Testa ments in the hack pockets of their trousers. Among many other things,
both sad and humorous, she described the remarkable love and devotion o f her mother and father during 5!) years together and how she would not have changed all Lhe years she spent as a daughter of "The Manse.” Miss Kay also played the organ. Mrs K. Lowe gave the vote
o f thanks and refreshments followed. Next Tuesday w ill he the
harvest supper, when pro ceeds from the sale of produce will go to Operation Agri to provide medical supplies. On Sunday, harvest thanksgiving services will be held in church a t '10-25 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the preacher will he the Rev. A .T . Hubbard.
