any of it — just the Press creating something out of nothing. Our main stars, Sue Johnston and John McArdle, announced a year ago they were leaving to star in a Jim Cartwright [Jay ‘To’ which was written especially for them, so there's nothing new in that.” Chris added that a third actor, Bill Doan, who

plays grumpy pensioner Harry Cross, had requested his part be lessened. “At his age lie isn’t wanting too much work any more, but lie certainly is not being written out,” she declared.

_ The problem with falling viewing figures, says

Chris, is all due to the seasonal “dip.” "Every summer, our figures dip in line with other

soaps, including ‘Coronation Street' and ‘Eastenders’,” she said. "The trouble is the Press has been so complimentary about 'Brookside' for years that I think we are just facing a backlash.” Local fans will he delighted to know that next

week sees the start of an extra night’s viewing, with the series being shown on three nights a week, and the omnibus on Saturday around 5 p.m. “ I ’m very excited about this,” said Chris. “The

extra night will give us the chance to follow more explosive story lines. ‘Brookside’ has always been popular for its realism. In fact, we were tlie first soap to explore the issues surrounding homosexuality.” When it is Chris's turn to write a script, she can he

seen working at her window from 8-15 a.m. to 5 or (i p.in.

“Then 1 unbury tlie house,'' she joked. "I

sometimes wonder whether passers-by see me writing and smoking away at my desk’ and wonder if I'm running some sort of nefarious organisation!" Chris, who is trying to enter the world of novels

with a present-day thriller after a disappointing first attempt failed to got off the ground, has to travel regularly to the “Brookside” set in Liverpool for production meetings. She will soon be Hying to Rhodes to look for possible location scenes for a future programme. "I get fed up with journalists claiming the

programme is becoming yuppified,” she said. “Times change and people change, hut 'Brookside' keeps its sense of realism. After all, most people aren't ‘The

Waltons’, so we dive in with both feet and show life as it is.”

estly say that he accepted all that was in the creed lie recited in church.

He was surprised 1 did not consider he ought to

agree with all the age-old beliefs of the church before he joined it, to become a dedicated follower of Jesus. After all, the first disciples wore not expected to

accept a creed or statement of common belief, hut simply followed Jesus because they were attracted to Him and His teaching.

When the Christian church came into existence as a body of believers, people had heard the joyous tes

timony of those Spirit-filled men, and could not resist joining such a happy hand. “Ah!” said the young man, “ hut what did they

believe?" “ Let’s have a look.” We agreed, as wc discussed, what Acts chapter

requested, accepting the challenge o f Peter to change their lifestyle.

They emphasised their decision to live differently

by joining the church in their thousands, sharing in the resurrection joy.

replied, “ except those people repented, being sorrv for their past sins." VI — I ’m sorry for my sins.”

“ I f you arc really repentant, you’ ll be sorry enough to want to stop living in the old way, and be

ready to begin a new life with the risen Lord by your side to help you.” “ It was, as we prayed together, that he accepted the Lord as his Personal Saviour.

JOE STANSI-'ILEI) “Oh! I believe in the resurrection!” my enquirer

two said, that the resurrection was the foundation of their belief. There, in that sermon of Peter, they had recognised that they had been responsible for the crucificion of the long-promised Messiah. Broken-hearted, they were ready to repent as

A joyful reunion'

A MAN who believed his old wartime pal had died at the hands of the Japanese staged a

joyful reunion last week. Mr Eric Hallant, who lives in Australia,

thought Clitheroe-born Mr Edwin Geldard had died in Java in a POW camp in 1942.

But after a chance meeting between Mr Hal-

lam and a Whalley woman at Singapore airport it transpired that Mr Geldard had survived.

We featured an appeal for information about

Mr Geldard and happily the two men were able to arrange it reunion in Blackpool at the home of Mr Hallam’s relatives.

“ It was it wonderful meeting and we have

vowed to write to each other regularly from now on,” said Mr Geldard, who lived iii Clith eroe until moving to North Wales in 1950.

The two had served together in the RAK in

Singapore. Mr Geldard, who was known to his RAE

friends as Ted, has been staying with his late wife’s sister, Mrs Winnie Ki’tto, and her hus

band, Jim, in Waddington, so that he would be conveniently placed for the reunion.

PEDAL POWER

IT was a case of “on your bike” for two members of Chatburn Youth Club who have been out raising funds for the club. Gareth Johnson and

Sherman Lofthouse cycled 35 miles on Saturday to the far side o f Pendle. Money raised is still being counted, but is expected to exceed £35.

"T h e y have worked

very hard and we are all proud of them,” said youth l e a d e r Mi s s Ha z e l Jackson.
