School pupil — who has already tackled more ventures in his life than you or I would in several — has sunk thousands of pounds into setting up a breathtaking collection of rare birds and animals at his Pages Farm, Slaidburn, only to have a request for planning permission to turn it into an open farm for the public turned
down. It is his fifth application to have failed in the
Ribble Valley in an expensive round of failed ven tures, including, in Clitheroe, the J. R. Snooker Hall and the purchase of the Hillards building. But instead of growing philosophical in his defeats, Bob has come out of his corner fighting. “They’re fighting the wrong person this time,”
said Bob, who told me he is taking legal advice, “because I won’t be downtrodden again. I’m ready for battle.” His application was turned down because the
access road from Slaidburn was “too narrow with no passing places” and because the council said he had not provided enough information. Bob argued back: “A former Ribble Valley plan-. ning officer prepared my application, which was

talking to counterparts on other councils or promo tional organisations, but is keen to build up a practical knowledge of the Ribble V a l ley as q u ick ly as possible. Living in guesthouses
while his house at Earby is b e in g made r ead y is already helping him to gather impressions of the valley, he says, but he welcomes discussions with anybody — especially over the issue of car parking, which is the first local hot potato he is handling for the council. His brief is to investi
gate the issue-thoroughly and to record arguments for and a g a in s t paid parking. His lack of knowledge of
the Ribble Valley is not a hindrance, he feels, for he is hoping to bring fresh ideas to the job. He has had plenty of managerial experience which should stand him in good stead. For the last three years

IT is a case of like father, like son, for the newly- formed Ribble Valley Young Conservatives. For acting chairman
Andrew Moore, a 17-year- old Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School pupil, follows in the footsteps of Clith eroe plumber Mr Peter Moore, who was himself chairman of the local Young Conservatives back in the 1950s and ’60s. They both share an
interest in railways, but do have some political differences. Andrew is the third
generation of the family to be involved with the party, for his grandfather, Syd, was involved with the C on se rv a t iv e s in Clitheroe, se rv in g as alderman and mayor, and today lives opposite the Conservative Association offices in Railway View. . But it will not be all
stuffy politics for the new group. “We are drawing up a
calendar of social, as well as political, events and hope to have a lively time,” Andrew added. Nor do they see the Young Conservatives as a

only for outline permission and contained all the relevant information. When are councillors going, to read up on what is needed for permission if it is only outline? “As for the road having no passing places, there
are actually seven. It is used every day by milk tankers, an agricultural contractor with large machines, cow trailers and the school bus and wc have had 37 coaches to visit the farm, as well as coaches from the village pub turning round in my gateway. . . so why single me out?” Meanwhile, Bob says that farm visits will con
tinue and that the council cannot stop him running his business, because Pages is a registered farm. Nearly 50 people visited on Sunday and courses on falconry are gaining in popularity, too. A phone call to the NFU brought him the advice to carry on as normal. Bob bought his farm in January to breed rare
birds and animals for centres all over Britain and already has the largest private collection of owls and falcons in Lancashire and Yorkshire, giv ing displays with the owls, kestrels and hawks throughout the North. He gets great supports from his wife Diane, a
celebrity in her own right when, as Diane Holgate, of Chatburri, she appeared as Hayley Mills’ sister Nan in “Whistle down the Wind.” The couple have two daughters, Glaire (2) and
Charlotte, a lively four-year-old already flying her own kestrel, “Nipper,” (and yes, he docs!) Bob said: “The family’s life is at Pages. If the
council wants me out, they will have to take me in chains.”
