Walk loved by all for centuries
I UNDERSTAND the feelings of Mrs M. Cross and fully agree with all her comments on the matter of Saddle or Fairy Bridge. I do n o t l ik e Mr
Boothroyd’s perfunctory dismissal of the problem. My comments are ten dered in the hope that they may be of some help to the many people who are obviously very worried and concerned. Before the definitive
map; in problems like this the only acceptable legal ev id en c e was th a t of usage. Here are four examples
of such usage: 1. “Fairy Bridge, as
Clitheronians call it, is situated in a most beauti ful part of a secluded dell, down which dances in'gay delight one of the clearest streams in Ribblesdale. The bridge is like a huge stone saddle, hence its name. It is supposed to be of Roman origin and is . the link binding two sections o f R om an r o a d w a y to g e th e r . T r a d i t io n ascribes its erection to fairies, who, to benefit an old woodcutter to the detriment of an old witch and ogre from Pendle’s slopes, built the bridge in a single night and left these sylvan scenes for aye.” 2. “We arrived at Cow
Hey, the farmyard lay open before us and we passed through it, bearing to the left and by the end of the house through a ateway and into the field. 'rom here, the path fol- ■
lows the fence side and makes a straight mark for Saddle Bridge or Fairy Bridge. “By crossing the bridge
and continuing on the road to the left, we immediately
tained an old lane leading
irectly to Browsholme.” Both the above were
written by the late Mr J. T. Fielding, headmaster, lay preacher, historian, naturalist, photographer and rambler — the first after a visit on September 2nd, 1905, the second after leading 42 people on a 18- mile walk from Clitheroe on Easter Saturday, 1905. A photograph taken by
him at the time shows the bridge with handrails and a stile on to it, to allow walkers but not animals to cross (all 84 years ago). 3. I first did this walk in
1933, at Whitsuntide, in glorious weather, enjoyed it and often made use of it when based locally. 4. In 1969, the newly-
formed Clitheroe Ram blers’ Association group crossed the bridge and proceeded beyond. These walks I wrote up for a fea ture in the “Advertiser and Times.” Your headline for this one was “Ram blers Gain Popularity.” The bridge, of course,
also hit the headlines when it'was rebuilt by public subscription.
All these reports indi
cate that here we have a walk in delightful country, on terrain walkable by all age groups , of g r ea t archaeological, historical and legendary interest,
AS befits the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the second world war, we are now hearing fine words from Government sources extolling the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women during the last war. While applauding such sentiments, one must also
Debt of honour .
ask why a man’s service to his country still cannot be recognised by proper and equitable financial support
for his widow. Successive governments of both political parties
have failed to recognise a grave injustice inflicted on the widows of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who gave their lives for our country. When, in 1973, it was decided that at last a proper provision should be made for future widows, no similar provision was made for those already widowed. This effectively disqualifies nearly all those who
lost their husbands as a result of the first and second world wars and all other conflicts up to and including
Aden. Despite considerable pressure in Parliament, both
governments have refused to see the justice of the case
for fair treatment. Over the next few months, the Royal British Legion,
of which I am proud to be a member, will be joining with other ex-service organisations to make the case to
the British public. But the efforts at the centre need to be reinforced by
local action to bring home to individual MPs the strength of feeling on this issue, for how can we with conscience accept a system that places two vastly dif ferent financial values on equal debts of honour?
COUN. ERIC BRACE WELL, Primrose Street, Clitheroe.
Roefield support
IT is to be regretted that “Curious” did not seek the facts before claiming last week that the council should make a generous donation to the Roefield project.
Your contributor may,
therefore, wish to note that the council fully sup ports this most worthwhile project, which will greatly benefit the residents of Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley.
In evidence of its good
faith, it has promised to contribute the not incon siderable sum of £250,000 to encourage the efforts of those engaged in the vari ous fund-raising activities. This information was
made public at the time of the council’s decision
COUN. MRS M. CLEGG, Chairman, Recreation and
Leisure Committee, Ribble Valley Council.
Nelson Street Chapel
I MUST write to correct a statement made by Kaye Moon in her “Round and About the Ribble Valley” column last week concerning the former Nelson Street Chapel, now housing the Stained Glass Studios. I was minister of the Methodist church there until
September, 1973, and the chapel was in use for at least 10 years after that date, the Rev. Graham Vickers, who left the Clitheroe Circuit in 1983, being the last minister when the chapel closed.

loved by all for centuries. No parish council or authority would dream of extinguishing such a fea ture m this heritage-con scious age. The definitive map is a
result of the implementa tion of the National Parks and Access to the Coun tryside Act 1949, being a map upon which the repre sentation of any footpath, track or road would be regarded as legal evidence of Public Right of Way. Implementation direct
ives were: • Produce a draft map. • Produce a schedule
detailing any additions or deletions on the map. • Make both available
for public inspection and comment or objection. • Publish the schedule,
in full, in the Press; It took the West Riding
Authority 16' years to do this, the map being placed in Gisburn Police Station for v iew in g b e tw e en October 1st and 31st,
1965.The schedule was published in full in the
“Clitheroe Advertiser and Times” in an edition pre ceding October 1st. An examination of this
schedule shows that there is no reference anywhere to Saddle/Fairy Bridge or to a deletion of the right of way over the bridge and beyond. So I contend, especially as it is still shown on the map, that it is a legal right of way, unless it was removed by a separate successful appli cation made after 1965 by some individual. In such a case, the requisite legal procedure would have to be followed, which would be a public notice in the Press. Personally, I do not
think this occurred, but it should be checked and if found to be so, then the parties interested in its retainment should put in for an addition to reinstate it. In view of the special nature of the case, I do not think any objector would have a leg to stand on.
Mr Boothroyd avers
that the local authorities did not include the path. Inclusion was not part of the procedure. They could only do two things, create a new fo o tp a th , by describing it in detail on the schedule as an addi tion, or abolish a footpath by describing it in detail as a d e le t io n ( th is is a pr inte r ’s term, which means do not print). There was no deletion, the foot bridge is still shown as a ifoothridge, i. e. a bridge to pass over on foot, and the path is still on the map. Maintenance of the foot
bridge and the clearing of any obstruction is the r e sp o n s ib i l i ty of the county council and I can assure you, from personal experience, that this is a
job it does very, very well. I feel that all that is neces sary to resolve the prob lem is courage and the requisite public pressure.
