Spirits droop in lost fixture
CHRISTMAS sp ir i t s de f initely drooped at Clitheroe Chess Club when the “A” team lost an away fixture against Blackburn “A” team. This brings its present league position to: played 5, won
0, drawn 1. This week, the club appealed for new members to come along and give the 10 struggling adult mem bers a “boost.” Anyone interested can telephone Peter Ryan (Clitheroe 25721). The fixture against
Blackburn started with Clitheroe in hopeful mood when the host team disco vered one of its players was unavailable and sub stituted a much weaker player, who was quickly beaten by Clitheroe’s Paul Fallon. This left Blackburn’s
strongest player on board two, facing Eric Marshall, who managed to go wrong in the opening stages, los ing a piece and rapidly the game. This is Eric’s sixth successive defeat, after playing all last season undefeated. B r ia n Carr fa c ed
ex-Clitheroe player Ber nard Shaw on board three and a knife-edge situation ended with Bernard com ing out on top. Former Blackburn player Jack Lawson played board four for Clitneroe, but could make no headway against his old team-mates and lost. Peter McQuade, who
played on board 5 for C l i th e r o e , was also beaten, making Black burn’s final victory score 4-1.
Antique jug is stolen
SMASH and grab thieves struck at a Clitheroe antique shop last week and took a jug worth about £300.
The th e f t occurred
b e tw e e n 7 p .m . on December 11th and 8 a.m. the following morning.
The piece stolen is a
. 19th century marriage jug, which stands around 40cm high and is hand decorated in green, blue and fawn. It is slightly damaged. Made in 1806, it has the name Pilkington inscribed on it.
Clitheroe police are urg
ing anyone who saw any thing suspicious near the shop on the night of the theft or who comes into possession of such a jug to contact them (23818).

WINNERS of the weekly bridge session at Clitheroe Pendle Club were Mrs K. Bulcock and Mrs J. Ken yon, Mrs P. Adey and Mr G. Horsfield.

Waddington, the flash backs have reawakened some memories she would rather forget. The clothes she says, were “quite dreadful” and feature pro m in en t ly an o rang e trouser suit which was her pride and-joy at the time, but which now appears in a totally different light! Asked if her husband
was ambitious, at the time she replied:. “If David was offered the job as Pope, he’d want to be God!” The follow-up, she says,
has revealed that not all things begin well and end well. The racehorse fea tured is now dead and the oil rig sank. And when filming took place, Ribble Valley’s MP was Chief Whip and not, as now, Home Secretary.

Mayor clocks up 275 visits — with more to come
WITH 22 weeks of his term of office still to go, Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. John Cliff has clocked up 275 engagements in just short of 800 hours. At the last council meet
ing of 1989, Coun. Cliff asked members for names of anyone deserving of a mayoral Christmas visit who had so far been missed. “I will do my best to remedy the situation,” he pledged. Following the second
concert in the Northern Chamber Orchestra’s sea son, Coun; Cliff said he was p lea sed to have received a personal note from one of the players thanking the Ribble Valley for such an a t ten t iv e audience at Low Moor Parish Church and paying tribute to the good accous- tics there.
Referring to his charity
appeal, Coun. Cliff asked for names of disabled resi dents who needed help in terms of equipment, par ticularly emergency tele phone facilities. The annual 10km road

Terraced homes to replace shops
A ROW of six terraced houses to replace vacant shops and a storeroom in Parson Lane, Clitheroe, has been given the go- ahead — as part of the borough council’s residen tial policy for the town centre.
Members of the Ribble
Valley Council’s Devel opment Control Sub-com mittee, who approved the scheme, heard that the vacant buildings were in a poor condition. They expressed disap
pointment that the scheme — involving property between 40 and 48 Parson Lane — did not include the empty shop at number 50. It was described by Coun. Ron Pickup (Clith eroe) as a a disgusting blot on the corner of the row. Mr Philip Bailey, direc
tor of development and cli ent services, said that the shop was not included in the application because it did not belong to the applicant.
Mr Bailey pointed out
that the scheme did not provide adequate parking facilities, but there was an open courtyard at the rear of the buildings. “Notwithstanding this
point, in the light of the council’s -endeavours to secure residential uses within the town, I am of the opinion that this pro posal is acceptable,” he added.
Mystery of vanishing pushchair
CHRISTMAS is coming and police are out and about trying to make sure that Ribble Valley’s geese and not the thieves are getting fat!
On the eve of the
busiest shopping spree of the year, they are warning residents and shopkeepers to take extra care. Christmas can be a boon
to thieves taking advan tage of the seasonal bon homie to feather their own nests. Police are warning Rib
ble Valley residents to keep an eye on purses, wallets and valuables dur ing shopping trips. The season of goodwill,
they say, can soon turn sour when pickpockets pounce and police warn of the dangers of wallets sticking out of pockets, purses on top of bags and shopping left in cars.
Their advice is to lock
all valuables in the car boot and take extra care this weekend.
Shopkeepers are being
reminded to keep an eye on the till and watch out for light-fingered custom ers or anyone a c t in g suspiciously.
Meanwhile, it seems
that pushchair napping could be a new and par ticularly mean form of crime to have arrived in Clitheroe. On Saturday, Round
Tabler Mr Tony Perry set out with his wife and son for a spot of Christmas shopping.
The afternoon’s high
the shop, found it heaving with customers and, in consideration to other peo ple and the shop proprie tors, left David’s push chair outside. When they came out a
light for 13-month-old David was a v is i t to Father Christmas in the town’s Kaydee Bookshop, in Moor Lane. The family arrived at
little later, the six-month old Silver Cross “Way farer” pushchair, worth about £80, had gone, to be replaced by a similar model in nothing like the same condition.
T h e m a t t e r w a s
reported to Clitheroe Police, who said the push chair could have been deli berately swapped.

Being without David’s
pushchair at this time of year was, said Mr Perry, “a real pain.” Police told him the inci
dent was quite common in other areas, but Mr Perry prefers to believe it was an unfortunate mistake and this week appealed to whoever had his son’s pushchair to return it to the family at their home, “Lynmoor,” Waddington Road, Clitheroe, or tele phone him (24583).

This year it falls on New

part is our own Chief E x e cu t iv e , Mr Oswin Hopkins — he has agreed to take part if we support him.”
Starting Mr Hopkins’
sponsorship with one pound a kilometre, Coun. Cliff called on his council colleagues to follow suit and added that several other officers were pound ing the lanes of the Ribble Valley in preparation for the event, Among them is Ribble Valley’s tourism officer Mr Keith Taylor who is hoping for the opportunity to combine the role of race organiser with race competitor.

Hospital worker’s sudden death
W ID ESPREAD sym pathy has gone out to the family of a 37-year-old hospital worker who died in his sleep from a heart attack.
Mr Clive William Field

Before moving to Great
Harwood, the couple had lived, at Shireburn Cara van Park, Clitheroe, for several years.
Mr Fielding had worked
at Calderstones for the past three years. Pre viously he had been a mar ket trader in hardware goods and before that worked as a baker for an Oswaldtwistle firm. His conne c t ion s with the Clitheroe and Whalley areas were through his work and his wife’s family.
His Chatburn-born wife
is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Hook, who have Christy’s carpet shop in Wh a l l e y R o ad , Clitheroe.
Said Mr Hook: “My son-
in-law’s death was very sudden. He was on a day off from the hospital and had decided to have a lie in after working on shift. He
just died in his sleep with out anyone knowing.”
The funeral se rvic e
