Red carpet for Stephanie (9)

LANGHO schoolgirl Stephanie Illingworth (9) p-p- picked up a rather special penguin on Friday. Ste phanie, daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Illingworth, of Moorland Road, was presented with the first “Chilly Penguin” rug off the production line at the UK’s lead ing carpet and rug retailer, Allied Maples, in Barrow-m-Fumess.

designed the rug herself and her design was chosen from hundreds of entries in a national competition for children under 12 to create a rug design on the theme of winter.

The reason for this red carpet treatment? Stephanie .

was a thrilled onlooker at the factory, when she saw her design being knitted into 1,000 rugs, which will be sold in stores at Christmas, with the proceeds going to

Stephanie, a pupil at St Mary’s RC School, Langho, __ the NSPCC. Although it was the first competition she had ever , , J

entered, Stephanie’s design was described by the com petition judges as “one to capture all our hearts. Chilly Penguin is a wonderful character, strong and bold. Sheer magic.” Her design came first in a regional contest, before reaching the national final, where it was the judges’ unanimous choice out of 40 finalists. Stephanie is pictured on the factory floor with carpet experts Robert Barker (left) and Glenn Harding.

Increase in water prices discussed

Fire Service’s Benevolent Fund, includes a private train departing from Pres ton, Blackburn and Clith eroe on October 7th, trav elling by the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle-Car- lisle line to Gateshead, a r rv in g a t th e Metro Centre at noon.

spective of the question of ownership, costs would inevitably rise because of the backlog of water mains and sewers requirin g .epair and replacement and to cater for new devel opment and increasing social standards.

Mr Buckley, who served

in the water industry for over 40 years before his retirement, said he was sure that the setting up of a new National Rivers Authority was a good thing, as it would remove a fundamental error made at the time of the reorgan- is a t io n of th e w a te r industry in 1974. Licens ing and control would once again be in the hands of an independent authority.

He drew attention to

th e c u r r e n t wave of interest in “green” mat ters and seriously sug gested that, if carried to a logical conclusion, such

policies could result in the ultimate in de-population and virtual abandonment of industry. He also won dered whether the advo cates of these policies had ever really thought them through and considered

costs. He e m p h a t i c a l ly

believed that water ser vices should not be either a political or a commercial football and he hoped that with the new legislation all sections of the community would work together for a better Britain. Several members raised
