place in the Tyneside Rally, Martin looked in a healthy position. Along with co-driver Chris Bra- cewell, the pair had had a good season and after eight rounds stood in third place overall in the chal­ lenge and second in the Colways Tyres Junior Cup. In only his second sea­ son of competition in stage


rallies, Martin was chal­ lenging with the best, despite a limited budget. In the ninth of the 10-


round season, Martin took his Vauxhall Nova to Wales for the Bridgend Forest Rally. Unfortunately, this


event proved to be the worst yet, with Martin losing a total of two-and-a- half minutes. The prob­ lems began as the ear was coming towards a sharp corner at around 60 m.p.h. As Martin approached the bend the brakes on the car failed, leaving the driver the task of throwing the car into the corner and hoping for the best. Luckily, he managed to


keep the car on the road and kept going with only a handbrake to halt his progress. With so little time to think about what might have been, Martin continued onwards and with his adrenalin still
