THE small tortoiseshell butterfly overwinters as a hibernating adult, emerging when the weather


warms up. I saw my first of the year on March, 27th and even though spring has now officially started, it may have been rather premature in view

summer migrants, with chiff chaff reported on the 25th, sand martin on the 26th and wheatear on the 29th. These early arrivals overlapped with the last of the winter visitors, several fieldfares and a few redwings still being present.
