Despite the increase in

personal anguish leading to deeper depression, and he was opposed to fairs being held to overcome such emotional problems. The true supernatural

power lay in the love of Jesus, which led to life and truth. Ways of positive healing

could be found within the church, added the rector,

who said he could cite everyday examples of this through the use of prayer

and the power of love. The fair, at the Swan

and Royal Hotel, attracted fortune tellers and lectur ers on astrology7. The landlord, Mr Joe

Gallagher, was ill and unable to comment on the event. His wife, Julie, said:

“They just booked a room and we let them get on with it. I cannot say whether they will want to hold another.”

Leaking roof is

threat to Gisburn’s ancient church

THE fight is on to save the ancient St Mary’s Church at Gisburn, where a leaking roof is

threatening the tower. An area of roof esti-

mated at 25 square feet will have to be releaded at a cost of several thousand pounds to save the build ing, which dates back to the 12th Century. The Vicar, the Rev.

Hugh Clark, set the ball rolling with a gift day recently, but response could have been better, and continued fund-raising will be one of the main themes during 1988. An architect’s report

into the extent of the damage is awaited before builders are appointed. But there is no doubt

that the problem is seri ous, said Mr Clark, with rainwater soaking timber joists as it pours through the bell chamber and into the ringing chamber below. “ This Norman-style

building has been a focal part of the village for cen turies. It is part of our heritage that must be preserved,” Mr Clark said. Anyone who is able to

help preserve the church can contact Mr Clark on Gisburn 214.

Agricultural

THE Ribble Valley Coun cil’ s Development Sub committee has approved an application for the erec

tion of an agricultural building at Edisford Hall

Obstruction case is not proved

A TRIP to a hardware shop to pick up a flame gun for weeding purposes e n d e d in a c o u r t appearance for a Clitheroe motorist. The town’s magistrates

heard that Alexander Far- quhar (29), of Whalley Road, left his ear parked on the pavement outside the shop in Wellgate. He denied causing an

unnecessary obstruction with the car and the magistrates found the case not proved. PC Roderick Graham

said the car was parked entirely on the footpath and although there was space for pedestrians to pass, the vehicle was eaus- in g a co ns iderable obstruction. The policeman told the

gun was over four feet long and although it was portable he had not known how big it was when he made arrangements to col

lect it. He denied that he had caused an unnecessary

obstruction, claiming that the pavement was wide enough to accommodate a mini alongside his own car.

Mean thief

MEAN thieves stole large ginger-haired doll in a red pram from a garage at the rear of Hayhurst Farm Terrace, Clitheroe. The doll and pram, of Ger man make, were worth about £100 and a socket set in a blue metal ease, worth about £50, was also taken.
