wines themselves. A thoughtful re-vamp
has improved the layout considerably, scrapping the tall centre-floor racks in favour of specially-de signed shelving round the outsides. This makes shop ping easier and the new shelves enable wines to be stored in a much better manner, with bottles laid on their backs. All too often, supermar
kets and off-licences store bottles upright, allowing the corks to dry out. Air can then get to the wine and spoil it. The increased shelving
also allows for a greater selection to be displayed. If originality is your
style, Whiteside’s can sup ply exclusive lines from most areas, especially France and Australia. Otherwise, there are a mere 900 different table wines to choose from. The firm is agent for
three Burgundy houses, Em i le C h a n d e s a is , Antonin Rodet and La- boure-Roi, who boast good-quality wines ready
for drinking immediately. Unlike most independents, Whiteside’s ships direct, cutting out the wholesaler and therefore keeping prices very reasonable. It also ships from the
Rhone and the Loire and has some good stock from Bordeaux, but public taste is changing and it now offers an extensive range of Australian wines. Far from being res
tricted to Castlemaine XXXX and "tubes of Fos ters,” Down Under has surprised many by coming up with value-for-money wines which have proved very popular. Previously unpublicised
wines from Baden and Bulgaria will appear in the new brochure and assis tant manager Howard Roache and general man ager Brian Smith have yet another ace to play. Following talks with the
Wine Development Board they now have an invalu
able aid for the inex perienced buyer — a guide telling how sweet or dry the wine is, what percent age fruit went into its pro duction and so on. The fruit of the vine is
no longer the domain of the snob — it’s there for everyone, so take a trip down to Whiteside’s, ask for help if you need it and above all, enjoy!

Memorable music
for 207th concert
THE distinguished organ ist and master of music at Hereford Cathedral. Mr Roy Massey, presented the 207th concert for Clitheroe Parish Church Organ Society.
The programme opened
with the romantic Paean by the English organist
and composer, Basil Har wood. and the other English piece during the
evening was the Rhapsody in D Flat by Herbert
Howells.
Other compositions included Praeludium and Trio (J. C. Kellner), Toc cata. Adagio and Fugue in C (Bach), and C e s a r Franck’s beautiful Prel ude, Fugue and Varia tions, which sounded excellent in the masterly hands of the soloist.
The final item. Varia
tions de Concert (Joseph Bonnet), was a real “tour de force” , including a very difficult pedal candenza. There was most enthusias tic applause for an evening of memorable playing.
