son (43), of Old Hall, was stopped by police after
Stephen Richard Hodg
driving erratically in Tos- side, said Mr Martin Crabtree, prosecuting.
Hodgson told officers he
had drunk four pints of alcohol and a subsequent test showed that he had 52 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35 mic rograms. Mr Richard King-Wil-
kinson, for Hodgson, said that his client had been out for a quiet evening at a public house in Tosside. As he left he saw a police car parked outside, but began to drive home, as he thought he was well under the legal alcohol
limit. When the police vehicle
followed him, he pulled to the side of the road be cause he thought
it
wanted to pass. Eventual ly he stopped in a gate way, got out and asked the officers whether there was something wrong
with his lights. Mr King-Wilkinson said
the driving ban would cause hardship to his client, who lived in a remote farmhouse with his invalid mother and a brother recovering’ from serious illness. It would also make his
job with North West Water more difficult, as he had to travel several miles to work in an area with no public transport.
MORE than £160 was made when the Clith eroe Inner Wheel Club held a coffee morning in th e Clit h er o e Mayor’s Parlour on
Saturday. Attractions included
a raffle and various stalls. The money has been donated to the local branch of the St John Ambulance.
By pass parking problem
CLITHEROE police are to be contacted about the problem of lorries parking on the town’s inner
bypass. ■Ribble Valley Council’s
Public Works and Health Committee was told that heavy vehicles regularly parked between Holden Street and Shawbridge. Coun. Howel Jones
(Clitheroe) said it meant that traffic emerging from Holden Street to the inner bypass had no vision. Also queues were caused as vehicles turned into Duck Street. Borough Planning and
Technical Officer Mr Philip Bailey said the problem would be solved when the haulage contrac tor concerned made his planned, move to Salthill. In the meantime the matter would be referred to the local constabulary.
By post
THE history of the postal system was recounted to Clitheroe Lady Farmers by Mrs S. Greenwood, of Colne,, in a talk entitled “Post to pillar” Mrs M. Billows gave the vote of

Refusal to sell toilet block
A REQUEST by Preston’s Chemists, of Whal ley, to buy a toilet block in the village has been turned down by the Ribble Valley Council. Members of the coun
cil’s Public Works and Health Committee heard that the company, which has recently acquired a shop adjacent to the prop osed doctors’ surgery on King Street, wished to buy a nearby toilet block and turn it into a phar maceutical store.
Coun. Jack Carr (Bil-
lington) thought that many people living near the block would be pleased to see it go. Some parents, he said, were un willing to let their chil dren out because of some of the “peculiar" people attracted to it.
He also felt the prop
osed new surgery would obscure the toilets and make them obsolete.
Borough Health and
Hous ing Of f i cer Mr Richard Isherwood said that more than £7,000 had been spent on the block in the past few years. He recommended that the council kept it until it became obsolete.
Borough Planning and
Technical Of ficer Mr Philip Bailey added that it would be unfair to sell the building after refusing a similar request from the Whalley GPs in 1986.
Shane’s on duty at the
Palace
FORMER Ribblesdale School pupil Shane Lord has been selected as a membe r of the el i te Queen’s Colour Squadron of the RAF Regiment. Shane (18) was pre
sented with the much-co veted special buckle to mark his acceptance at RAF Uxbridge in a cere mony watched by his par ents, Mr and Mrs Keith Lord, of Moorland Cres cent , Cl i the roe , and brother Scott (9). This hand-picked squad
ron of only 120 men repre sent s and guards the sovereign at public events throughout the world, as well as helping to protect
airbases. ■ In March, leading air craftsman Shane begins a three-month tour of duty. Later on, the squadron will go to Australasia and Hawaii, and a trip to Hong Kong is on the cards. Shane underwent his
basic training at RAF Swinderby, near Newark, and then spent 12 weeks’ gruelling training at RAF
Catterick. This involved extensive
night exercises on the moors and sleeping in ditches in the recent freez ing weather. The next few months wil
be equally arduous, keep ing up the highest stan dards on duty at Buck ingham Palace and major public events.

Not inspired by French name idea
RIBBLE Valley council lors are unimpressed by an idea to bring a touch of the Continent to Whalley. The suggested naming
of a s t reet “Vihiers Close,” in recognition of the village’s French twin, was met with indifference by members of the coun cil’s Public Works and Health Committee. Coun. Jack Can- (Bil-
lington) said he could have thought of far pleas ant e r name s . Many people, he felt, would not know how to pronounce Vihiers, while Coun. Mrs Joyce Lilburn (Bolton-by- Bowland) believed others would not know where it
was. The name was sug
gested by the developer of the site off Accrington ' Road in conjunction with the Whalley Community Twinning Association. Committee members de cided to revi ew the matter after the parish council had discussed it.
