Long shot knocks Clitheroe off victory course

Fleetwood Town 1, Clitheroe 1

CLITHEROE’S road to victory was blocked by a 73rd minute Fleetwood goal some might have described as fortuitous and others as a gem.

The visitors were on

course to end a dismal record of defeats at Flee twood’s Highbury ground when Denis Underwood punched a long cross out of the penalty area. The ball fell perfectly for Flee twood full-back Arron Hunt whose first time vol ley from 30 yards sailed over the stranded keeper and defence and inched under the crossbar. The goal brought Flee

twood right back into a m a t c h C l i t h e r o e , desperate for title hunting p o i n t s , h a d b e e n controlling. The home side suddenly

looked dangerous and forced a string of corners

Clitheroe could look back on several missed chances after they had taken a 31st minute lead.

The goal came from Paul

Beck who made no mis take from the penalty spot after Gary Butcher was brought down by Flee twood keeper Armfield.

Up until then, the Clith

eroe d e fen c e , which in c lu d e d G r a h am Dewhurst in place of flu victim Chris Chisholm, had coped well with Flee twood’s attacks.

rivals Rossendale United. Rossendale’s good runs

in the FA Vase and N'WCFL Cup have left them facing a serious fix ture pile-up and “double header" weekends are the only solution to clearing their remaining 23 league games before the season’s end.

That match will see the

likely home debut of Earl Thompson. The big striker, who was signed after 14 months out of top- level non-league football through in ju ry , has pleased officials in his two games to date yet came in for barracking from Clith eroe fans at Fleetwood on Saturday. “It's very disturbing,”

said chairman Cyril Whi teside. “People are trying to compare him with Mul

totally different type of player. We’ve altered our style completely since he joined us and are hitting long balls for him to knock flown for Beck and Bar- row. I think the system

well so far and can only improve. He’s not yet fully fit and needs five or six games to settle down pro perly in the side. I hope our supporters will realise this and give him a bit of support.” On the transfer front, a

former Clitheroe player is set to rejoin the club this week. The defender/mid- fielder, currently with a NWCFL Club, is expected to sign before the week end. Clitheroe are also showing interest in a highly rated striker. Rumours that Paul

Waddington Youth 1, Chatburn 6

CENTRE-FORWARD Craig Taylor hit a hat-trick to help Chatburn gain a comfortable

Aitken Shield win. Chatburn made a flying start

against fellow Division Two team Waddington when Darren Finch shot home after good work by John Hodgson. The match became a little

s c r a p p y as W ad d in g ton searched for the equaliser but two goals within a minute nut Chatburn back on top. The first came from Hodgson and the second from Taylor, who found the net with a clever chip. Chatburn continued their

good work after the break when Taylor nodded in his second

goal after a Hodgson shot had rebounded out off the bar. The hat-trick was completed from the penalty spot and John Kirk scored a consolation goal for Waddington before Paul Breth- erton completed the scoring with a well-hit shot from the edge of the area. Chatburn: Johnson, McCar-

Old documents details big money deal

THE fiftv-year-old con tract for the “big money” transfer of one of Clith eroe Football Club’s early stars has come to light. The document details

the move in March 1935 of Clifford Chatburn from Shawbridge to Blackpool. Mr Chatburn, who died

last July, had been with his town team for five years when Blackpool, then of the Football League First Division, “swooped” for him. Clitheroe earned the

princely sum of £230 from the deal, with the promise of another £170 if Mr Chatburn was re-signed

the following season. Mr Chatburn, m

f a c t ,

stayed with Blackpool for a couple of years before moving briefly to Burnley and then back to Clitheroe where he completed his playing career. Mr Chatburn, who went

on to become Clitheroe Mayor and a county coun- c i l lo r , also achieved notoriety in the sporting world as a talented ath lete. He won many medals and trophies and the con tract for his transfer to Blackpool was found among them. The document, which is signed by the Blackpool

A CRICKET score looked likely for East Lancs League leaders Clitheroe when they went two up in the first five minutes. Phil Ashworth scored

the first with a suspicion of offside and one minute later Geoff Young headed in a cross. The Read d e fen c e

lead. In the second period,

Young scored from the spot after Mark Darcy had been brought down and then Round headed per fe c t ly past the Read

Victory

SECOND DIVISION W.haljey Celtic moved into the last 1(1 of the Aitken Shield with a solid performance against Sabden.

Celtic inflicted the damage on

their first division opponents in a in-minute first-half spell when they scored three times.

The first goal came from

Peter Daman who tricked his wav into a good shooting posi tion before firing home from 20 yards. Steven McCullough added the second from close range after an unfortunate goal kick had left the Sabden defence wide open and then Shaun Side- bottom beat two defenders before scoring the third.

Celtic sat back in the second

half, but despite having much more of the play, Sabden could only score through Nigel Ware- ing’ in the 70th minute.

The home side's experienced

'keeper Andrew Ronnan was rarely troubled and his faultless performance spread confidence throughout the Celtic defence. As well as Ronnan, in good

form for Celtic were Donald Porter. Kevin Ainsworth and Ian Wareing. In the Sabden team. Ian Boocock, Paul Wray and Dennis Balmbra gave 100% effort. Whallcy Celtic: Ronnan,

Luck holds for new pair

A NEW car and a new partner brought more good luck for Clitheroe rally co-driver John Meadows, on the National Breakdown Rally last weekend. Insurance broker John, of

Hawthorne Place, with Scottish driver Andrew Wood, took a works-prepared Opel Manta 400 to a splendid fourth overall on the Yorkshire-based opening round of the British Open Championship. Former Stonyhurst man, Ian

Springers, also lost 1-4. John Willis won 3-2 but Eddie Vidler, Mike Bar rett, Robert Fielding and Dave Knight were all

defeated. The 3rds, at home to

Pendle 4ths, won 4-1. Rick Ashton, after a barren patch, won 3-2. Dave W a lte r s and George Senior won 3-1 and John Beggs triumphed easily by 3-0. A slightly out-of-form Dave McKenzie went

down 1-3. The ladies 1st team,

Grindrod co-drove another Scot, Jimmy McRae, to 11th overall in a Lancia Delta. The tough rally ended in dis

appointment for Sawley driver John Morton. John, of Rabec House, was back home on Saturday night, his Subaru motor having developed electri cal faults after 14 stages.

away to Manchester Northern, lost 1-4. Sharon Wi ll is won 3-0 for Empress. Sheila Willis and Sue Beggs had long matches and went down 2- 3. Marilyn Fletcher lost 1- 3 and Anne Cowking was defeated 0-3.

Trinity on the rampage

Trinity YG Under-16s 19, Hoddlcsdcn 1

TRINITY took an 8-0 half-time lead in this Blackburn Youth League match after hat-tricks from Mason and Peel and two goals by Robinson. They were even more dominant in the second half, scoring through Peel (4), Mason (3), Dewhurst, Tingle and Lightfoot.

Henthorn United Undcr-14s 3, Trinity YC Under-l ls 1

BAD finishing by Henthom and good goalkeeping from Trinity’s man-of-the-maten Kenyon kept this Starkie Brothers Cun quar

ter-final close. Henthorn domin ated much of the game but were r e s tr ic te d to g o a ls from Dewhurst, Smith and Stokes.

Henthorn United Undcr-16s 3, Bricrficld Celtic 5

HENTHORN twice went ahead in the Stirling Cup quarter-final but went down ,after being reduced to 10 men in the second half. The goals came from Bur gess (2) and Peel. On Sunday Henthorn entertain Whinney Hill Juniors (kick-off 11 a.m.). Henthorn Under-15s are at home to St John’s on Saturday (l0-15 a.m.).
