Grant cut: ‘no panic

RIBBLE Valley Council’s block grant from the Gov ernment, which influences the extent of rate in crease, is to be cut by £195,000. But councillors have

been told not to panic until a delegation from Ribble Valley has discus sed the matter with the Department of the Envi ronment. The chairman of the

Policy and Resources Committee, Coun. Mrs Sheila Maw (Whalley) said: “We don’t want any searemongering.” Borough Treasurer Mr

Gordon Onslow explained that a £195,000 reduction would mean an increase in rates over and above any increase related to council expenditure. He and the Chief Ex ecutive, Mr Michael Jack- son, had already sent a letter of protest to the Department of the Envi

ronment. The committee decided

that Mr Onslow, accom panied by Finance Com mittee chairman Coun. John Cliff (Longridge), should see Department of the Environment rep resentatives in London. Mr Onslow said there

might be a hope of per suading the department to

scale down the reduction. Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, December jth, MM 11
