brought to mind by a book, “Shakespeare: The
Lost Years”, by E. A. G. Honigman, Professor of
English literature at the University of Newcastle- on-Tyne, which was pub lished earlier in the year and has appeared on my desk for review. Professor Honigman’s
playwright-to-be came to Lancashire, firstly as a tutor in the home of Ale x an d e r H o g h t o n . of Hoghton Towers, and later went to Rufford on the death of Sir Ale xander. Here, the young man’s
interest in "things theatri cal” was stimulated by his as socia tion with Sir Thomas’s players. Mingl ing with the Thespians, it
is suggested, and like so many young people in later generations, William became stage-struck, and took the first steps in the career that was to lead to the Globe Theatre and royal patronage. 'Honigman has written a
book results from many years of dedicated re search and is of very con siderable in te re s t to theatrical historians. It proves nothing, but the some hundreds of deeds and documents quoted do much to reinforce the theory that the William Shakeshaft, of Rufford, was indeed the William Shakespeare of Stratford-
on-Avon. In brief, the professor's
assumption is that, short ly after leaving the Strat ford Grammar School, the
detective story: he has delved deeply into docu ments not previously av ailable. He suggests other lines of research into the 400-year-old mystery and his conclusions provide a much more feasible solu tion to Shakespeare's lost years than any others 1 have previously encoun tered. “Shakespeare — the
Lost Years" is published by the Manchester Uni versity Press in paper back at £4.95.
