Ken hopes to become movie star
STAGE-STRUCK Ken MacMillan plans to lead a double life during the next 15 months in the hope that he may be spotted by a big-time movie talent scout.
During weekdays he
will follow the normal routine of working for the Preston branch of a na tional finance company. But at weekends he will
don a second world war German pilot’s uniform and play the lead role in a large-scale amateur film being shot- in the Rossen- daie Valley.
Eagle," it tells the story of a young Luftwaffe pilot shot down over Britain who is befriended by an English housewife. Ken (22), of Croasdale
Drive, Clitheroe, was chosen for the part from scores of young hopefuls by Darwen ambulance driver Ron Irwin, who has written and directed the film as well as provid ing £7,000 to finance it. Filming began in July

not to risk it and went for a steady job instead," he said. “Now I can combine the

best of both worlds — I have my normal job during the week and I can
to win a place in the com petition and then go on the international circuit. “With a bit of luck I could be spotted by one of
the major studios." Ken is no stranger to
the Ciitheroe amateur
but it is anticipated that it will not finish until next year. After editing, it will be entered in the “Ten Best” amateur film com petition the following year. About 4 0 amateur
actors are taking part in the film and there is a production crew of more than 20. Ken, who is unmarried
and lives with his parents, has always wanted to be
stage. He has appeared in productions with Trinity Players and Clitheroe Parish Church Operatic and Dramatic Society.

world! THE identities of the two local men Down Under, mentioned in a story in last week’s Advertiser and Times, have been re vealed. They are James Parkinson (20), of St Paul’s Street, Low Moor, and Simon Laxton (21), of New Page Fold Farm, Waddington.
Small James’s mother, Mrs
Barbara Parkinson, con tacted our office to report that the two pioneers have been given six- month visas and arc
travelling round the coun try looking for work. James, a former pupil
of Ribblesdale School, and Simon, who attended Riversmead, bumped into a Manchester couple who emigrated eight years ago. The lads met Mr and
Mrs E. Furnish outside the Royal Perth Hospital and asked for directions for a bus to Albany. After saying goodbye
the couple later wished they had extended their hospitality further. Now, thanks to the Ad
vertiser and Times and Mrs Parkinson, their wish mav well come true!

AROUND a couple of hundred years ago — it could have been more or slightly less — somebody built a short row of cottages in the village. They were at the junc
tion of Mitton Road — now it is Station Road although the station has not functioned as such for almost a quarter of a cen tury — and Clitheroe Road. The cottages were on a historic site, opposite the old Grammar School, on what used to be known as Stocks Hill. "I'm not sure whether I
saw them there myself." the late "Billy” Pollard once told me towards the end of his almost 90 years, “or whether I was told about them as a very small hoy, but that is where the village stocks used to stand." This the name would confirm. Time went by and. in
due course, the end cot tage became a smithy and wheelwright's shop run by a member of the Eatough family, a name inextric ably ‘linked with our vil lage for some (100 years or more. The site proved ideal

metal tyres on to the cart wheels he so laboriously fashioned and, no doubt, in so doing contrived to earn a very adequate living.
Shortly after the end of
the 14-lS war the cottages were demolished — you can see a painting of them in the abbey should you so desire — for they were quite inadequate for 20th century living. Using the most modern of building techniques, the County Council built a couple of houses on the site and the well was filled in.
Unfortunately, modern
technology proved less re liable than practices fol lowed for some centuries; within 60 years the build ings developed serious structural faults and the bulldozers moved in.
In minutes two cottages
became a pile of unsightly nibble. The site lay dere lict for several years and then the District Council moved in and announced plans to build there. The council officers, prudent chaps, were de

termined not to be caught napping. Before finalising their plans they decided to investigate the sub-soil. A derrick was erected and drillers went to work. “Are they digging for
oil?" a local wag asked me. “They’ve certainly brought up some very funny stuff,” an official told me and it was then I was able to pass on infor mation about the well sunk there centuries before. Why am I telling you
this? It all goes to prove, 1 think, how very useful a knowledge (however slight, for we shall never know it all) can be. Not only does it provide a fas cinating subject for study, but for very good practi cal reasons. In a village the very
name of which is inter preted as meaning “The Field of Wells,” where less than 200 years ago there were no less than seven public wells and a much greater number of private ones, he would be a foolish builder indeed who did not investigate the soil beneath his feet. A knowledge of things
common place to his an cestors could save him — and local authorities, too — an awful lot of brass. Possibly on this occasion it has alreadv done so.
