Children dream of home with a foster family
.THREE:.C]itheroe: children. are hoping that 1984-' will be the 'year to •.
The lively teenage
trio, who have been in care in a variety of homes during the past six years, decided to publish their story in the hope of a Ribble Valley home..
Their social worker,
Mrs Doreen Halliday, believes th a t . a caring home with s ta b il ity would be the answer for the youngsters. Cathy, Helen and
Craig — who ;■ do not want their surname pub-

their lives until their pa rents separated. Cathy (14) and Helen

(12) are pupils of Rib- blesdale School, which they attend from a chil dren’s home in Wilp- shire, and Craig (13) is at a special residential school in Cumbria. •
The fa ir -h a ir e d
youngsters stress that they would like an “ordi nary, not posh” family. They like the idea of living near the country
wide, preferably, near children their own age. Cathy, a lively, talka
tive girl, would like eventually to work with children m a nursery. A typical teenager, keen on discos and pop music,
she feels-most at home in l a o n e o*ir! T_oli?v4-«
round & about
Craig is a very affec
tionate child, who would stay with his new family during holidays from his school in Appleby. Staff at the school are pleased ■ with his prog
ress.'-Craig loves the .countryside and if living anywhere near a farm
. would be only too happv. to help out.
Helen, the youngest of
■ the family, wears glas s e s and is a .v e r y feminine child. Perhaps she has suffered most by the present situation and needs a stable home to build her confidence. One thing all the
youngsters are sure about . . . “We" want to be together with a foster mum and dad — and perhaps their children — and then . we feel we could be very happy,” said Cathy.
• If fostered, the chil dren would still retain links with their natural family. Their mother lives in Blackburn and sees them every Satur day and their father in Clitheroe se e s them ev e ry two or three weeks.
- There are also regular
. preferable for foster pa rents to live within reasonable travelling distance of Clitheroe. The children have two
.older sisters in the area. The Clitheroe Social
Services office would back any foster family with advice and help and there would be a weekly payment to support the children. This would probably be enhanced to cope with the family of three. “It would be like a
dream come true if we could be together in a new home this summer,” said Helen. Any interested family
should contact Mrs Hal liday on Clitheroe 25146.
, Effort for
Abbeystead A COFFEE evening to aid the Abbeystead disas ter fund is to be held in Waddirigton Village Club a week tonight. The evemng, organised

CLITHEROE and district people’s support is sought in the fight to keep open the children’s ward at Ac crington Victoria Hos pital.- Families or individuals
with stories to tell of the care they have received at the hospital during its long life are asked to put their thoughts in writing and send them to Black- burn, Hyndburn aiid Ribble Valley Community Health Council, Richmond Chambers, Richmond Ter race,-Blackburn.' The information will be
collated by the council into a document which will be used at any in quiry into the fate of the ward.

“HELP! Help! Stop thief! Stop thief! The cries were. distressed and anguished) On the back lane there
Weekde Until 5.3qt
is an oak tree, old and gnarled; several of them as a matter of fact. Being old they are full of holes, and in one, right opposite this window (the frame of which I m ust get around to painting), two starlings have taken up a lease for the season.
There they have estab
lished their nest and their activities provide us with a lot of interest. This morning-my wife,
her hands covered with flour, called me. “Come quickly, quickly,” ; she cried. There in the lane was a grey squirrel. Sud denly he darted into the starlings’ hole in the oak: tree, and emerged, sec-; onds later, with an egg in his mouth.
Mother - starling was
ignored their pleas but didn’t linger. Up the lane he scarpered, pursued- for
furious and frightened. Throwing caution to the winds, she screeched and attacked the squirrel and in moments was joined by her mate. No interpreter was needed for their de sperate cries and shrieks. The voracious squirrel

the first few yards by the bereaved starlings with futile peckings and an guished cries, before re turning to their desec rated nest. It was a domestic tragedy enacted before our very eyes; " a smash and grab which would undoubtedly attract headlines in any Birdland Gazette..
. . Now, as I write, the
poor parents sit forlorn upon the lawn. “Is it worth it? Shall we try again? Will he come back?” one can almost see them thinking. We are concerned, too, about the increase in the number of magpies in the area.
A few years we saw
them only infrequently; now there are few mi nutes of the day without three or four, sometimes more, in the lane.
Handsome, immaculate
birds they are,' in their black and white evening suits which they wear morning to dusk, but they are as hardheartened and uncaring as that monstr
ous squirrel. Last year, we are cer-
. tain, they were respons ible for pillaging a black bird ’s n e s t !within a
couple of yards of our window, but yesterday — and I am delighted to report this — one of them met his match! Early in the morning
we had thrown out a few scraps and down came one of our collared doves to enjoy a leisurely ; break fast. Not for long. Down came a magpie intent on sharing the feast, for a- minute or so he was ig n o r ed b u t th en a p proached a little too near and the dove — the bird symbolic of peace — had endured enough. . . She flew in to attack
and, without retaliation and much to my surprise, off went the magpie with his tail, metaphorically, between his legs. Who are those folks who keep tel ling me, “Nothing ever happens in-the village?” It„’s happening all the time.
