Good win oyer league Clitheroe 2nds 185 for 4

CLITHEROE 2nd moved nearer to the top of Divi sion One of the Ribbles- dale League with an em phatic victory against top side Baxenden. Asking the home team

to bat first, Clitheroe soon had them in trouble

with some fine bowling by Tim Bleazard. He took four of the first five wick ets on a track that was better to ball on than bat on.

Baxenden slumped to

45 for 5 wickets when Paul' Clegg decided that there was only one way to bat, and promptly hit 66 runs . . . in six overs! H ow ev er , when he

went, Clitheroe got a couple of quick wickets but “tail-ender” Whittaker struck 38 not out. With Tattersall (24) Baxenden ended up 181 all out off 30.6 o v e r s . Bleazard.

■finished with 7 for 67. . In r ep ly, Clitheroe made the worst possible start when Ashworth was dismissed for a duck. ' Undeterred by this set

back, • Bod’en (14) and Westhead (34) then ham mered 48 off the first four overs to leave the home side wondering where to bowl. Boden was then ad

judged caught behind when the ball hit his shoulder and one won dered — six rims when-' Westhqad

caught — whether w a s - g o in g to Clitheroe’s day. : It turned out that the

Clitheroe take full points after a hailbiting finish

Clitheroe 123 for 9, Baxendcn 95 ,

A RETURN to April conditions produced a low scoring game at Chatbum Road, but one with plenty of excitement and nailbiting finish!

Clitheroe, put into bat, for the three points

found the wicket, softened by the mid-week deluge, difficult to score runs on.

Professional Andrew

Townsley’s poor batting form continued, being dis missed for 3, but Keith, Fawcett and Terry O’Con nor both reached double figures before playing over full-length deliveries from Baxenden pro Frank Potts.

Graham Littlewood re

scued his side with a solid innings of 23 before being bowled attempting to in crease the tempo. This left Neil , Duck

worth at the crease and together with a number of partners he returned to form with a valuable 37. A f t e r 32 o v e r s

Clitheroe were 93 for 8 . and short of runs. Roger Banks and Philip Hall came together and hit 30 between them. In the con te x t o f what was to happen later, theirs was an extremely valuable partnership.

Baxenden’s bowlers

were in form and used the wicket to good effect, with Barry Fenwick fin ishing with 6 for 65. It was clear from the

start of Baxenden’s in nings that they were un likely to reach 124 and claim five points, but the three points total of 100 was a definite possibility. They -began sh ak ily , losing their first two wic kets for 15 runs.

While Potts was at the,

batting crease, Baxen den’s fortunes improved, but after his dismissal they suffered a mini-col- lapse and slumped to 57 for 7. Pilkington and Chap

man then came to the wicket and took matters in hand. Their stand put on 33 and was only broken when O’Connor threw down the wickets from the outfield to dis miss Pilkington. As Townsley prepared

to bowl the last over, Baxenden needed just five runs to claim three points and the winning draw. Clitheroe had to restrict them to fewer than that

or claim two wickets to win.

. With his third delivery, Townsley bowled Cron- shaw and Fenwick came out to bat with a runner. Fenwick played and

missed at Townsley’s sixth delivery, the wicket keeper removed the bails and appealed. The umpire gave Fenwick out. The umpire pointed out

that although Fenwick’s back foot had not left the crease; the runner had strayed down the wicket. Everyone agreed that

this was a correct and perceptive piece of umpir ing but controversy raged among the pundits in the bar afterwards. Was Fen wick run out or stumped? No mat ter what the answer is, Clitheroe are another five points better off! -

Lawrenson Cup Blackburn Northern 111, Clitheroe 2nd X I 115 for 4

CLITHEROE 2nd XI completed a fine weekend with .a comfortable victory in the Lawrenson Cup over their opponents in the final last year, Blackburn Northern 2nds! The visitors elected to Ashworth was joined by

bat first and were soon in

' trouble with two wickets down for only 11 runs scored. The next wicket fell at 32. N. Robbins (32) was

threatening.to build up a useful ; score when' some smart fielding by Roger Banks. saw him run out and this turned the game back in Clitheroe’s favour. Burgin (11), Jefferson

(22) and Pratt (10), were the only double figure scorers and with wickets falling steadily, Northern' were all out for 111, using only 32.5 of their allotted 36 overs. Malcolm Blackburn took

3 for 23 and skipper Phil Bishop a superb 5 for 16, for CUtheroe. Knowing just what they

had to do, Clitheroe set about their reply steadily, but after hitting a four over extra cover, John Boden tried to do the same again and was caught at point with the score on 13.
