thought that the young people were doing jobs which should have been done by union members in«
- work;. “They also thought we , , .
were getting the , work done on the cheap. How ever, every parish had to precept to cover costs of transport for the young
people.” A few young people will
finish off schemes already started when the MSC news came through. A scheme to build up
the new sound archives at the Castle is to continue after the union involved — NALGO — made no objection to the six young people involved complet
ing it. Coun. Mrs Lilbum said
she hoped that the prop osed “ Instant Muscle” scheme could help to re place the conservation
scheme. “ It could prove a more
permanent solution in completing various jobs as the young people involved will not be limited by a 12 month employment,” she
said.
Van struck schoolboy pedestrian
A CLITHEROE driver whose van went out of control and struck a 14- year-old schoolboy on the pavement said he was av oiding another vehicle which came from a junc tion in front of him. At Clitheroe Magis
tra te s ’ Court Steven Porter (21), of Grafton Street, denied driving without due care and at tention, but was fined £60 and had to pay £25 costs and £15.30 witness ex
penses. The accident happened
on the Clitheroe inner bypass one Sunday lun chtime, near the junction with Highfield Road. Porter’s van, which was
travelling towards Whal- ley, went over to the wrong side of the road and hit pedestrian Mark Atherton, of Henthorn Road, who broke his

Family service
ALL things new was the theme o f the family p a ra d e s e r v ic e at Clitheroe Parish Church on Sunday. Rite A is being introduced at these monthly services in the
hope that the up-to-date language and livelier music will help those not familiar with church ser
vices. During the past year
the church youth organ isa t ion s and Sunday School have been helping prepare the themes and participating in the ser vices. This week, the Brownies led the interces sions and presented the offertory. The colours were returned during the hymn "Lord of the dance” played by organist Mr
Charles Myers. Fined £50
AT Clitheroe Magistrates’
Court, a fine of £50 was imposed on Gordon Ken
nedy (26), of Standen Road, C l ithero e, for drunk and disorderly be haviour in Castle Street.

Swimmer Peter leads the way
RIBBLESDALE School swimmer Peter Jones recorded his best-ever victory on Saturday — in an event in which he seldom competes.
After surprising himself
with a fast qualifying time, Peter (13), of Moor land Crescent, Clitheroe, decided at the last minute to enter the junior boys’ 110 yards breast-stroke at the E n g lish Schools Swimming Association Di vision 2 finals in Liver
pool. Much to his delight, he
came in a clear first, de feating boys from Lanca shire, Cheshire, Mersey side and the Isle of Man. Peter came near to
making it a double, but after a close race he was pipped at the finish of the
110 yards freestyle. His p r e v io u s b e s t
achievement was three second places at the North Lancashire district
finals two years ago. Peter, who has been,
swimming competitively for four years, now goes forward to the national
schools finals in Surrey on October 26th and ,27th.
