Ribblcsdale Wanderers 238 for 3 dec. Read 140 for 6

IT WAS a record-breaking finale to the season for Ribblesdale Wanderers at Whalley Road.

Whalley end season third

Whalley 81 for 9', Barnoldswick 83 for 2

W H A L L E Y 'S fa in t championship hopes were snuffed out by Barnold swick, despite a defiant undefeated 31 from skip per John Slinger.

' The sides began the game level on points, still within striking distance of leaders Settle, should they falter. But it was Bamoldswick who ran out winners thanks to the bowl ing of Michael Scothem and former Lancashire all-rounder Bernard Reidy. ' . These two opened the attack

and were still going strong 36 overs later. They were always on top and had it not been for opener Slinger, Whalley would have been really humiliated. He watched helplessly as

partner after partner was sent back to the pavilion, among them professional Hugh Page for six. In Barnoldswick’s reply, Barry Grave and Ian Scotnem

the scoring rate down but when Grave was run out Reidy came in and dished out some punishment. When Reidy was caught by

McGarry off Foster the score was 74 for 2 and Barnoldswick were almost home. The win ning runs were hit in the 22nd

over.

As it turned out the result was immaterial as Settle gained

the points they needed to con firm their position as champ ions, and Wnalley were pushed into joint third place with Padiham. Whalley: J. Slinger not out

A SWASHBUCKLING

62 not out from Alan Hen derson gained five points for Clitheroe at Earby. Although neither side

had anything to play for in the trophy sense and the wicket was damp and slow, there were some fine shots and another in nings of distinction. This was from Earby’s

New Zealand opener Stuart Robertson. He scored 74 1 off 103 de liveries out of an opening stand of 122 with profes- sional Steven Gee._____ . T f was only ah unfortu

nate run out that dep rived him of his second century of the season.

After his departure Gee attempted to increase the run rate and wickets fell. Chasing 167, Clitheroe

started well and then'im proved even more. Terry O’Connor (14), David Hardcastle (26) and Steven Blackburn (31) all played soundly and struck the ball well. At 93 for 3 a Clitheroe

nnett came together at 15 to tear apart the Read attack. De nnett was in devastating form before being run out with 116 to his credit, including eight sixes and 11 boundaries. Cottam, too, tantalised the

Read bowlers, racing to 68. His onslaught included four sixes to overhaul Read's Stephen Rush- ton and late challenger Alan

Henderson (Clitheroe) as “six- hitter" of the season and win himself 50 pints of beer! Read pro Graham Bushell

came in tor a hammering along with Richard Kawalec, Richard

Goodway, Mike Ranson and Michael Georgeson. Faced with such a high

target, Read’s best hope was a winning draw, but they made a disastrous start, Rushton being run out with the total on three and with it his hope of winning the 50 pints of beer, having hit 21 sixes up to Saturday. John r y e and Graham

Bushell took the score to 55 before the former was caught and bowled by David O'Neill. Bushell went on to make a well-deserved 56 falling to Johnson. Richard Kawalec offered re

sistance to the Wanderers attack and made 20 before be

coming O'Neill’s second victim.

Gary O’Connor was 15 not out when Read ran out of overs,

still some way short of the winning-draw target. With the five points, Wan

derers ended the season in fifth place, their best effort for sev eral years. For Read it was just another

game in a season which they will want to forget. Ribblesdale wanderers: J.

CLITHEROE CC Under-I5B have won their way to the final o f the NE Lancs Colts League to be played at Chat- bum Road, on Sunday. Clitheroe, the Pendle sec

tion winners, beat Cherry. Tree in the semi-final scoring 82 for 3 In reply to 79 for 7. Rawtenstall, the Rossen-

dale section winners, will be Clltheroe's opponents in the final which starts at 2 p.m.

NARROWLY DEFEATED

Clitheroe Ladies 4, Vernons Ladies 5

CLITHEROE were narrowly beaten in their opening North- West Ladies’ League Division Two match, despite having much ofithe possession. Anne Morris, who.was im

pressive on her debut, put them ahead early on, but Ver nons hit back and then went in front. A deserved Clitheroe goal through Jackie' Parker levelled the scores but Vernons scored again to go in at half time with a 3-2 lead. Vernons added' to their lead

after the interval against the run o f play, but Katharine - Wylde, who was outstanding, for Clitheroe closed the gap. C l ith e ro e w en t fu r th e r

LADIES’ Captain at Clitherde Golf Club, Mrs Anne Panter, with Mrs Eva Velvick, won a Stableford1 foursomes competi tion there with 32 points. ,

*,v..eagues iust collapsed as the Wanderers* bowlers — notably Paul Atkinson (3 for 18) — took

season. Under pressure from the op •

posing fly-half, Clitheroe con ceded a penalty to give Dukin field an early three-point lead. Stirred into action, Stuart

Greatorex and debutant winger Steven Holden made some promising runs, and despite fielding a re-shuffled pack, due to injuries, Clitheroe competed strongly in the line-outs and dominated the scrums. But they could not secure •

vital second-phase possession . and all too often saw promising moves break down as the ball was lost in a pile of bodies. Towards the end of the first half, bad tackling allowed

Dukinfield in for a try, and only strikes against the head by hooker Phil Dinsdale saved Clitheroe from going further

behind. Clitheroe started the second

half anxious to make amends, and soon forced several opposi tion mistakes, one of which re sulted in a successful penalty by Stuart Greatorex. - Shortly afterwards, a drop-

ped-kick penalty by skipper Martin Emmott was disallowed for not being taken through the mark.

; ' This was to prove Clitheroe’s

last major attack, for' towards the close Dukinfield pulled out all the stops and would have scored several times but for stalwart defence by Hampson and Lund. Clitheroe: Lund, Holden,

Hyde, Greatorex. Hampson, Emmott, Tattersallj Crossley, Dinsdale, Dubowski, Thomas, Duxbury, Nichols, Holmes, Whalley.

C L I T H E R p E s e c on d s achieved their first win of the season in fine style; running in two tries in the f irs t 20

. minutes. ‘ The first was a classic win

ger’s effort by Nick Gretton, and the second, a good solo by centre, Robin Luna. Dukinfield struck back within

minutes with a converted try, only to see Lund take off again on a mazy run which ended in a try under the posts, and a 10- p o in t h a l f - t im e lead fo r Clitheroe. Although Dukinfield ex

ploited the home side’s lack of fitness to score two early second-half tries, a determined final quarter clinched the match for Clitheroe. The vital tries were scored

by prop Henry Barlow — his first for the club — and in the final minutes by Barry Malony. This emphatic victory, was

due largely to sound scrum maging and good tidying-up and should heighten competi- tiori'for'first-team places. Clitheroe: Malony, Gretton,
