SH AW B R ID G E fa v o u r ite Ronnie Drugan’s playing days could be over. Complications set in after he broke a leg for the second time in 12 months playing against Cheadle last week. Drugan (26) was taken to

hospital to have his knee set in plaster after being injured in a

tackle. His knee began to swell the

next day and after more tests, surgeons operated on ruptured ligaments. A specialist said he may have to give up playing. Drugan, .who works for IC I

and lives in Brothers Street, Mill Hill, Blackburn, joined Clitheroe three years ago from Mill Hill St Peter’s. A dynamic player, he fought

hard to regain fitness and nis first-team place after breaking his leg a year ago. R e c e n t ly , a f t e r N ig e l

Whiteside’s move to Radcuffe Borough, Drugan made the right back spot his own. Cutheroe kept a clean sheet while he held that position. A collection will be held for

him at Clitheroe’s game against Padiham on Saturday. Meanwhile, Clitheroe man

ager Eric Whalley is hoping to sign Great Harwood full hack Peter Hutchinson as a replace ment. Hutchinson had a brief spell

weakened side; 'Clitheroe should stih have extended their 11-match unbeaten ran. Loss of concentration allowed

Maghull their opening goal from Pr ince , in the 44th minute, and their 72nd minute winner, scored by Hardacre, was dubious.

/ Although keeper Dennis

Underwood looked at fault, he claimed he was pushed off ba lance. The well-positioned re feree and linesman thought otherwise. Mick Ashcroft’s brave diving

header from Steve Mullen’s S2nd-minute corner ga ve Clitheroe hopes of at least a draw. Substitute David Proos, brought on for the last few minutes, was denied a dramatic last-gasp equaliser when his header struck the bar. But CUtheroe never reaUy

competed where it mattered. Clive Dunn, Ronnie Haworth

and John Taylor were not fully fit. And CUtheroe had to name the injured Proos as substitute. In addition, Frank Richards,

returning to first-team duty after a long injury lay-off had not completely recovered and Eric Kinder was out of position at right back. Of the midfield trio, only

David Sharpies played reason ably weU, whUe Steve MuUen was the pick of the forwards but lacked support from Taylor and Geoff Young. Man-of-the-' match was defender Mick Ash

croft. This was a poor show from

CUtheroe, especially consider ing their league position. And there wiU probably be many more “physical games” before the present league campaign is

concluded. C l i th e r o e : U nd erw ood,

Livesey secures

points Clitheroe Res 2, Waddington 0

GOALS from Paul Green and Brian Livesey gave CUtheroe the points in this East Lancs

League derby. Waddington attacked from

the start but rarely troubled Holt, CUtheroe’s keeper. Three times in the first half-

hour, Clitheroe broke through Waddington's' defence, only to be foiled by brave keeping from Nuttall. But Green gave them the

lead just before half-time with a cracking left-foot shot into the roof of the net. In the second half both sides

•battled away, but with the mid- field congested, there were few scoring chances. - Clitheroe began to look

dangerous on the break in the final quarter and L ives ey clinched v ic to ry when he

. turned in a cross from substi tute Morris.

Shawbridge’s big draw

THE scene is set for Shaw- bridge's biggest draw of the season. Clitheroe entertain Padiham

on Saturday who are back at the top o f the North West Counties Third Division. The visitors’ squad will include former Shawbridge favourite, Ian Ashworth. Managed by former Black-

bum Rovers coach Alan Brad shaw, Padiham are two points clear of Clitheroe who have a game in hand. Doubtful for Clitheroe are

Cl iv e Dunn, John Taylor, Ronnie Haworth and David Proos, all carrying injuries.

The match kicks-off at 3 p.m. Clitheroe Reserves are on

target for a league and cup double. Their 2-0 defeat of Waddington boosted their league prospects, and they are through to the last eight of the President’s Cup. On Saturday they take on

Pendle Forest away. Kick-off is at 2-15 p.m.

Chatburn fail to

cash in Mansfield 2, Chatburn 0

CHATBURN continued their dismal ran of league results on Saturday despite having most of the play.

' , The visitors made a bright

start and looked very danger ous in the first 10 minutes. Mansfield slowly' began to j

settle and. came more into the; game, twice going close. ’ Chatbum’s best chance fell to

Jimmy Coleboume after the goalkeeper parried his first shot — but he failed to connect properly with the rebound. With half an hour gone, Man

sfield took the lead with an 18- yard shot.

i In the second half, Chat-

bum’s failure to finish con tinued as playing conditions became difficult. With seconds remaining,

Mansfield broke clear from what looked an offside position and their striker shot home as the Chatburn defence stood

still. Chatbum: Dinsdale, Hitchm,

P. Coleboume, Lawson, Smith, Boyd, Wright, Anderson, Wad- dington, J. Coleboume, McCul lough. Sub: Robinson.

Defences on top

Pendle Forest 1, Whalley Arms Celtic 1

CELTIC, back in league action after an enforced four-week break, found it difficult to gain

any rhythm. But they started well, look

ing dangerous on a poor play ing surface, and took the. lead. Neil Clayton’s header hit the bar, but Ronnie Foster was there to nod home the rebound. Celtic sat back somewhat on

their lead and only inspired tackling by Donald Porter and David GilUbrand kept the home side at bay. On the half-hour, Forest equalised with a well-

, struck 12-yard shot. The second half produced

some fine football with “ close shaves” in both goalmouths. But the defences had the upper hand and the points were

shared. In fine form for Celtic were

Conway, Porter, Gillibrand and

Foster. ' Whalley AC: Conway, Ains

worth, Gillibrand, P o r te r , Finch, Elliot, Moriey, East- wood, Foster, Clayton, Doman. Subs: Wilkinson, Ror

Ronnan. „ , , . This setback was all the , , . „ „

more disappointing be cause it reversed the teams’ earlier encounter that ended in a 20-7 vic tory for Clitheroe. The Littlemoor side had

only themselves to blame, for the game was decided in the first 15 minutes when Grasshoppers scored three'easy tries. Once again Clitheroe

left themselves with a mountain to climb after a poof start and despite a spirited fightback, they never really looked like succeeding. They com pounded their problems by missing three penal ties, two in the first half and one in the second. But there were some en

cou ra gin g fea tu re s . Paul Taberner, showing excellent form, and Robin Lund pro duced fine runs. Preston kept their grip on

the game, pinning their oppo nents down with accurate

kicking. The home side created

danger with high kicks into the heart of Clitheroe’s defence, sending their wing threequar- ters on some penetrating runs. And only Clitheroe’s powerful defensive tackling stood bet ween Preston and a much

bigger victory. C l i t h c r o e : W a r d le ,
