A record collection

THE' Chatburn and dis trict branch of the Royal British Legion recorded an all-time high in this year’s poppy appeal — a total of £1,872.

The sum is £819 up on

last year, mainly thanks to Mrs M. Woods and Mrs M. Parkes who organised a sponsored walk and raised £660. A holiday draw boosted the figure by £139.25 and poppy s a le s in c r e a sed by £144.95.

There was a special

word of thanks from hon orary organiser Mr Jack Altham to the pupils of Riversmeade School, who made up 4,000 poppies by adding leaves and silver foil.

In dialect

A GOOD evening was held at St Paul’s Mothers’ Union when members were hostesses for a visit from Marton ' MU, near Blackpool. Two ladies from Burn

ley entertained with “Weavers Tales”, told in Lancashire dialect. Supper was served by

St Paul’s members, fol lowed by community sing ing led by Stella and Der rick Smith and Tony Capewell.

CP SCHOOL JUMBLE

WELL over 100 people v is i ted W isw e l l - Barrow School last week for a coffee evening, which raised &164 for school funds.

There were brinq-

and-buy and cake stalls, a tombola and

raffle and roll-a-penny and penny-in-a-hucket competitions, run by members of staff, pa rents and friends.

Some of the refresh

ments were given by a friend of the school.

Pictured with some

of the pupils and vis itors is headmaster Mr David Brooks (right).

Now Wendy’s mobile thanks to villagers

WHALLEY youngster Wendy Hollin, who was born with three limbs missing has been given extra freedom, thanks to several organisations in the village. Wendy (12) is now the

proud owner of a Batri chair — a four wheeled battery propelled car for use mainly on pave ments. The money for the

vehicle — which travels at about walking speed

— was raised mainly by Whalley Lions, Whalley Leos and the village Trefoil Guild. Her parents, Keith

and Dorothy Hollin, also contributed towards the £550 needed for the second-hand machine. A new one would have cost about £1,500. Wendy’s father ex

plained that the family lives in Whittam Road,

about a mile from the village centre. Now, thanks to the hand-con- trolled car, Wendy can take trips into Whalley on her own. Wendy, who attends

Broughton School, Pre ston, chosen by her pa rents because it is all on one level, has only one arm and wears artificial legs. She is thrilled with

the vehicle, which is kept in the family garage, while the car stays outside! Her sister, Victoria,

who is nearly 11, is a pupil of Whalley CE School, which Wendy used to attend.

THE Blackburn Sinfonia’s concert which was to have been held at the Royal Grammar School for Girls, Clitheroe, today, has been switched to St Mary’s College, Blackburn, in stead. The proceeds will go, as intended, to the hospice fund.

Mayor aims to make it a bumper Christmas

A BUMPER Christmas for the elderly and sick is what the Mayo r of Clitheroe, Coun. John Cowgill, is forecasting if

the town's generosity comes up to its usual standard.

Appealing for donations

for his Christmas Welfare Fund, Coun. Cowgill said that local people did not forget the less fortunate during the festive season.

The money provides food parcels and tins of

biscuits for the elderly and sick, which are deli vered personally by mem bers of local organisa tions. Last year, nearly 500 parcels were deli vered.

Staff at the Town Coun

cil have been sending out over 100 letters to indus try and professional bodies and organisations, informing them of the

’ fund. As in previous years,

all donations will be ack n ow led g ed in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times and should be sent to the Town Clerk, Town Hall, Church Street, Clitheroe. Cheques should be made payable to “The Mayor of Clitheroe Wel fare Fund.”

Chessmen find tough opponents

Inn. In what was expected,

to be a very tough fix ture, the Clitheroe team s ta r te d wel l when Andrew Cooper drew his board 1 game and shortly afterwards Brian Carr drew on board.3. But Bernard Brown

was unable to maintain his excellent string of re sults on board 2, going down in his first defeat for the team. Both John Trappes- Lomax and S tephen

Robinson succumbed to their board 5 and 6 oppo nents, giving Rossendale an unassailable 4-1 lead. Eric Mansfield battled

on board 3 to the 40 move time control, when he had a two pawn advantage over his opponent, who resigned after considering his position for no less than 24 hours. This made the final

score 4-2 to Rossendale. Tonight the A team
