CLITHEROE Parish Church Hall has changed

to gas fired central heat ing at a cost of £2,300. It was two months ago

that caretaker Mr James Slater discovered the 10- year-old oil fired boiler had burst, and the Vicar, Canon J. C. Hudson, said: “We decided that a gas boiler would need less m a in ten an c e

cleaning.” The original radiators

THE summer house in Clitheroe Castle grounds, which was destroyed by fire last year, is to be rebuilt at a cost of £4,000. Members of the Ribble

Valley Council’s Recrea tion and Leisure Commit tee were told that £8,682 had been received from the insurance company to wards the cost of replace ment. Deputy Planning and

Technical O f f ic e r Mr Peter Nock said that a scheme had been pre pared for rebuilding, as far as possible, a vandal- proof summer house. I f it were built under

the community enterprise programme, the cost would be £4,000. The remaining money

— £4,682 — will be left in the kitty for future use. Coun. Charles Wark-

man (Mellor) said he was sure the summer house would be appreciated.

A DESPATCH clerk with Ribblesdale Cement in Clitheroe for 30 years, Mr John William Hamby Braithwaite, of Hillside Close, Clitheroe, has died aged 67. Mr Braithwaite, who

retired two years ago, was a bus d r iv e r in Clitheroe before he joined Ribblesdale Cement. He leaves a wife, Rose,

a son, John, and a daugh ter, Pat. Cremation was at Ac crington on Monday.

CLITHEROE Naturalists Society had a view of the countryside through a

postman’s eye, when Mr D. Tempest, of Todmor- den, gave an illustrated lecture about his round. Mr Tempest, who deliv

WITH donations still coming in, the Wadding- ton branch of the Royal British Legion has raised over £1,100 for this year’s poppy appeal. The sum is already £80

up on last year, with the house-to-house collection in Waddington and West Bradford showing an in crease of 13 per cent. The concert and raffle held in the village made a profit of over £200.

OUTLINE planning per mission has been granted by the Ribble Valley Council's Development Sub-Committee for the erection of a four-bed- roomed detached house in the garden of 26 Station Road, Whalley.

BOOK issues from Ribble Valley libraries during August to October in creased by nearly 1,500 compared with the same period last year. In the quarter, 164,795

volumes were issued, an increase of 1,439. There was also an in

crease in the number of cassettes — 425 more than for the same period in 1982. In a repo rt to the

Ribble Valley Council’s Recreation and Leisure

Committee, district libra rian Miss Barbara Snell said that the “pay-as-you-

borrow”. cassette scheme is far more popular than the annual subscription method.

THIEVES who broke into Clitheroe Cricket Club forced open the gaming and cigarette machines and took 50p pieces to the value of £127 and 60 pack e ts o f c ig a r e t t e s . Clitheroe CID is inves tigating.

A PEDESTRIAN barrier is to be built for £300 at the Edisford car park, Clitheroe, to prevent chil dren using an unofficial access through a hedge and running directly into the road. Members of the Ribble

Valley Council’s Recrea tion and Leisure Commit tee were told that at pre sent there is no pedest rian-only exit and that as a result access was made through the hedge. The committee also de

cided to lay out the pre sent unofficial exit as the main pedestrian access.

No luck for

Chatburn

Ribchester Res 2, Chatburn Res 0

CHATBURN’S bad luck continues. Ribchester completed the double over them in a game that could have seen the home side trailing 3-0 in the opening 20 minutes. Scott Thompson was

unfortunate not to'score a hat-trick but Chatbum in stead conceded two sloppy goals, Keeper Neil Winck- ley seemed to have the ball well-covered until beaten by a nasty bounce. The second came after

Hitchen mis-hit a back- pass to put the Ribchester attack clear. Chatburn might have

scored after the interval when Smithson was moved into attack. But Ribchester also had sever al chances. Dinsdale had a fine game for Chatbum.

THE Ribble Valley Coun cil’s Recreation and Lei sure Committee has given its blessing to a request by Clitheroe Town Coun c i l fo r the C h e s te r Avenue play area to be renamed “ Th e Tom Robinson Play area” . Speaking about the

former Ribble Valley and Clitheroe councillor, the

late Tom Robinson, Coun. Fred Green (Wilpshire) said he was a great ser vant for the town.

THE Ribble Valley Coun cil’s Recreation and Lei sure Committee is to make no change in the £15 a y ea r ren t for the Roefield Bam, Clitheroe. The Ribble Valley Sports and Recreation Council rents the barn and has a 14-year lease on the building.
