Radio mast siting is agreed with some reluctance

A NEW radio mast to be erected on Wadding- ton Fell is to allow Lancashire police to operate on new frequencies agreed internationally in 1979.

The details were out

lined at a meeting of the Ribble Valley Council’s Development Sub-Com mittee when the county council asked for observa tions on the project.

Two weeks ago the

county came under fire from Waddington Parish Council for lack of infor mation on the project, which they feared would desecrate the fell.

Planning and Technical Officer Mr Philip Bailey said that the mast would be 200 feet high and would possibly carry re flector dishes.

In a report, Borough The police had stated

that under agreements it was mandatory for all their VHP radio equip ment to change to new operating frequencies by the end of 1989. As a result, the constabulary will need'a new station in East Lancashire.

proved, it could also be used by the Regional Health Authority, the fire brigade and ICI, which already has a radio station on the fell.

Thornlcy Ridge and Wis- well had been suggested, but were unsuitable.

Alternative sites at

the new mast is mainly the Ribble Valley, but it would extend as far east as Barnoldswick. Land lines could not be used sat isfactorily for the coverage needed by the emergency services.
