Loose stones danger

THE Ribble Valley Coun cil has written to British Rail chairman Sir Peter Parker urging that some thing is done immediately to make safe several loose coping stones at Clitheroe station. ,

The unsafe stones are

on a wall behind the old passenger platform, just a

few feet from the public footpath to Kirkmoor

Road.' At a meeting of the

council’s Development Sub Committee, Coun. John Cow'gill (Clitheroe)

said that if a stone fell while somebody was walk ing along the footpath, they could be killed. When Coun. Cowgill re

called that he had raised the matter three months ago, deputy planning of ficer Mr Peter Nock said a letter had been sent to BR and a reply received to the effect that the wall would be repaired when the rail company had

time. But the sub-committee

agreed with Coun. Cow- gill that something should be done immediately.

bear which “guards” a corner of the pub. It once belonged to the Essex Barn Restaurant, Brain tree, scene of a murder in the 1960s that claimed the life of the owner’s wife. John’s collection also in

cludes a “scold’s bridle,” a device for keeping quiet

nagging wives! Then there is a clock

ing-in machine from the oldest mill at Haworth

and a Greback fish caught off South Africa in 1894.

One item not on display

is a Pholyphon, a Victo rian ancestor of today’s

record player. The collectors’ items

have aroused interest from as far away as Canada and New Zealand, say the couple, who plan to move to Blackpool before Christmas.

John says his collection .

“just snowballed” after he acquired the first gun. He explains simply “You get hooked.”

Looking to the future of Stocks Reservoir

A MANAGEMENT scheme designed to ease existing problems at Stocks Reservoir, rather than to attract more people into the area, has been ap proved by the Ribble Valley Council’s Plan ning ‘ and Transporta tion Committee. The scheme, which was

exhibited in the Council Offices a couple of months ago to allow interested groups and members of the public to comment, will now be forwarded to the North-West Water

Authority. Most amenity and

sporting organisations in the area, such as the

Rambler’s Association, have offered suggestions, and amendments on public access and fishing have been made.

agreed that landscaping should take place_ along side the main traffic route through the area, to pro vide an attractive drive with a good view of the

reservoir. Access to the reservoir

bank is, however, consi dered dangerous by the NWWA and is not to be

allowed at present. The use of fishing boats

is to be restricted to six in a specific area. Nature conservationists and the CPRE are totally opposed to other forms of sport taking place on the reser voir and this conclusion has been accepted by var ious water sports bodies at regional level. The NWWA has made it clear that there are a

number of operational reasons making Stocks unsuitable for other sports, though the ques tion of occasional use by the local Sub-Aqua Club will be looked into. The idea of establishing

some form of management structure to monitor the operation of the scheme has been welcomed by the majority of those con

sulted. The aim is to create a

group with representa tives from all the main interested parties, meet ing on an annual basis to assess any problems
