vivors who took part in a daring Commando raid on the port 40 years ago. That famous expedition has, been vividly recalled over the weekend with a p a rad e th rou gh St Nazaire and a service on the R o y a l Y a ch t Britannia. Mr Parkes (63), of
Ribble Lane, a driver at Ribblesdale Cement, was making the return jour ney on Britannia after flying out on Friday. The weekend received
major television news coverage and Mr. Parkes’ family were thrilled, to catch a glimpse of him during the parade. Mr Parkes was a Com
mando on one of the motor launches which, in try in g to land at St Nazaire, was blown out of
the water. With an injured knee,
he and his comrades even tually made it to the shore where they were taken prisoner by the Germans. Originally from the Isle
: of Man, Mr Parkes and his wife settled in Chat- burn in 1956. As well as being a member of the St Nazaire Society, he is on the committee of Chat- burn R o y a l B r it ish Legion. Hiking is one of his favourite pastimes.

tablished in December 1980, heavy lorries have beep able to enter the area for loading purposes
only. But permits will now be .
available for vehicles which have difficulties driving around the zone. The permits, to be dis played on windscreens will last for a ’ specified period of time and will also specify the route to be taken through the zone. .

The police, who will be consulted before the issue of any permit, have said they would prefer, a system which gives ex emption to a' lorry dis playing a valid permit rather than exemption'for access or loading. Members of the Ribble
Valley Council’s. Public Works and Health Com mittee, who were told that the. new. system “would not reduce the zone’s effectiveness” , have given their blessing to the scheme, despite letters of objection from Chatburn, Bolton-by-Bowland, Gis burn Forest and Sawley Parish Councils,- which fear the permit scheme will be “the thin end of the wedge”. __________

Trees felled Eleven trees considered
dangerous on the Tosside Church plantation — in cluding an oak and an ash — have been felled. The. PCC called in a
tree surgeon who said the trees might fall on the old vicarage or on electricity cables. The felled trees on the
plantation, which the church keeps in trust for the village, will be re placed with the .same type.

heifers, 19 calf bulls, 39, fat cows, 97 ewes, 91 spring lambs and 208 hoggs forward. Light-steers made to 115.2p
per live kilo (average 103.8p), medium to 105.2p (101.5p),
light heifers to 106p (101.5p) and medium to 108p (100.2p). Uncertified steers made to 103.8p (98. Ip), heifers to 99.4p
(97.7p), calf bulls to 118p (110.2p), and fat cows to 90p
