The other main encourage

ment for Wanderers from this match was a fine debut by 16- year-old Murray Walker as wicketkeeper. He has moved to Church Meadow from Whalley and skipper Jack Ainsworth was pleased with his initial per formance at senior level.

The home batting was below

par, no fewer than seven men being caught out. The openers managed only 13 between them but a stand of 41 between Steven Proctor and Dennett stopped a too early slide. Ironi- callyjt ;, was John Ingham, the

dismissed both men in quick succession and then accounted for Slinger. The three wickets went down for the addition of only 11 runs. Ingham Joined Baxenden this season. - v That Wanderers passed the

Asked to bat, Earby did so

in no uncertain terms. Profes sional Steve Gee and David Little had 52 on the board at

the end of 10 overs. The introduction of Andrew

Townsley to the attack slowed the run rate and only 32 were taken off the next 10. Just when it seemed that

Clitheroe were gaining the upper hand Mick Chappie hit 53 runs off 33 deliveries, in cluding six sixes and three fours. But this was not the end, Gee opened up in similar vein and at the end of 36 overs Earby had 215 runs to their credit. Clitheroe’s reply never really

approached a run rate likely to earn five points or even three,

R E A D are still looking fo r their f irst win o f the season afte r y e t another disappointing batting per formance. Put in, they were dismissed

for 86 in only 22 overs, the innings being wrecked by spin ner Peter Jones with the excel lent return of 6 for 16 in 5.5 overs. Skipper Michael Georgeson

was tne first to go, caught on the long leg boundary at seven. Billy Lamb looked good and the score, moved to 40 before opener Steve Rushton was caught at the wicket. Despite losing Lamb six runs

later to a fine catch by .Roger Green, Richard Kawalec kept the score moving and appeared comfortable until Jones was b rought into the attack. Kawalec then lived dangerously for a while but soon became Jones’ first victim. Having lost half the side in

only an hour Read then desper ately needed someone to “dig in” and a period on consolida

tion but this was not to be. With the exception of Peter

Worsley, who was bowled, the remaining wickets all fell quick ly to aggressive shots, result ing in a very early tea interval. After tea ‘Jones was taking

being scored was that there was some brilliant goalkeeping allied to goal-line' clearances — and poor finishing by Wad dington. Green (P), Gladwin and Walker all went close in the

the all-important goal from the edge of the penalty area. Waddington appeared to
