Remarks meant for the council

I REFER to the report in last week’s Adver tiser regarding certain remarks made by me at the Council’s Housing Committee on an applica tion by a Whalley family to buy their council

house. I would like to make it

clear that when I used the woi;ds “ a trick and a dodge” I was referring to the committee’s use of the powers contained in^.the Housing Act 1980 for a purpose for- which in my view they were never in tended.

Generous help and giving

MAY I, through your paper, thank the many people concerned with the Royal British • Legion Pop p y A p p eal

Clitheroe. This year, the house-to-

house and sti'eet collec tions were up. Congratu lations are due to the col lectors and the generous givers also deserve our grateful appreciation. The appeal would not

THE story of a Lanca shire lad who emigrated to America during the Civil War — revealed through frequent letters to his parents — was the enthralling subject of Clitheroe Probus Club’s speaker, Mr B. Lewis, of Blackburn.

comments have been mis construed as they were directed solely at the council.

people cheerfully and un selfishly give of their time and energy, whatever the weather. My thanks also go to

the works, banks, clubs, hotels, shops, the library, town hall offices and schools. The Rotary of Clitheroe

gave me the usual support of spending the full day on the Saturday and the following Monday evening counting the collections, for which I sincerely thank them for a job well and patiently done.
