Clitheroe 3, Whickham 2 IT WAS a thrill-a-minute when Clitheroe made club history by beating Clitheroe, one-nil down
with only a minute of normal time to go, came back from the dead when in-form defender Mick Ashcroft headed a superb goal to force extra time. And within two minutes
of the re -sta rt John Taylor headed the Shaw bridge side into a 2-1 lead much to the delight ofithe 147-strong crowd. With their tails up,
Clitheroe continued to dominate the game de spite the resiliance of the
visitors. At the start of the
second period of extra time, Ian Ashworth, who had his best game for a few weeks, went past two defenders only to see a great shot blocked. How ever, it fell to the ever- consistent and hard work ing David Proos who made no mistake from six yards. With Clitheroe leading 3-1, anybody would have

A PENALTY 10 minutes from time gave Clitheroe Reserves a deserved point at Oswaldtwistle on

when a sweeping move by the Clitheroe pack took them from the half way line to Bolton’s try line; John Conboy though was- adjudged by the referee to be' held on the line. Through this Conboy damaged his ribs and a short time later had to

Played in bad conditions
Clitheroe saw the return to rugby after a long time of Alan Sweeney, a prop forward who used to be a 1st XV regular. Sweeney had a good first
match back along with Martin Byrne they were the best of the Clitheroe forwards. Bolton’s greater weight in
the forwards though told with an avalanche of tries in the closing minutes. At half-time the score was only 4-0 but as the match wore on Clitheroe were unable to control the

burn Rovers and teams from the Ribble Valley Netball League.
Playing on a round-robin
basis, the winners, who did not play the Rover's team, defeated the two ladles’
teams 8-2 and 5-4. And if the netball was not enough to keep everbody fit,

ALTHOUGH most of the side had not previ ously played together, the Ribble Valley League produced a sound performance to defeat the Nelson League in an inter-league game played at Calderstones.
Valley took the lead
with an own-goal that Nelson conceded after a period of strong pressure, and Steve Neary made it 2-0 just before the break. Nelson pulled one goal
back b e fo r e Andy McClean scored Valley’s fourth goal from a free kick. Steve Neary made it 4-1 in the 75th minute but Nelson scored again just
