all manufacturers offer their customers some ’ form of warranty. Some last for 12 months and others up to three years. On top of that there
are tempting finance offers. Interest rates are at rock bottom levels. Some dealers even offer interest-free finance. Then there is the at
traction of the long in tervals between services of the new cars. A full service can set the cus tomer back quite a lot. So nowadays, manufac turers are striving to extend the interval bet ween servicing. It is now the norm to have a gap of 12,000 — usually about a year — between each visit to the work shop. Often imitated, never equalled.
More and more cars are beginning to model
themselves on the Ford Cortina. And to compare themselves with it. Well, imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but they also say flattery will get you nowhere. And, certainly, no other car has come within miles of the Cortina for popularity. That’s because no other car has been
designed with the same genius. As a piece of engineering the Cortina is perfectly balanced. Come and see the Cortina GLin our showrooms - and enjoy it on the road. We believe you have a balanced outlook too.

variety of second hand cars but it is my opinion that nothing can beat a brand new model. A car with spotless paintwork, unmarked interior and a shining engine/ A car that no one else has driven and one that is f r e e from rust and grime. Once you have bought
a new car, the usual troubles associated with second hand cars can be forgotten about. Tyres ana exhausts do not have to be thought about fo r two y e a r s and longer, neither do ball joints, track rod ends,1 suspension or wnatever. Additionally there are no MoT tests to be taken for three years. The variety of new
models on offer is as wide ranging as it could ever be. There is the cheap and economical through to the expensive ’ and luxurious. And here

in the Burnley, Clitheroe and Pendle area, there is a wide selection of repu table dealers to choose from. The showrooms are large, warm and well-lit
s ta f fe d by fr ien d ly salesmen, who are only too willing to help. They can help the customer 100 per cent, right from
the moment they walk into the showroom to the time they leave with their new car and after wards.
Over the last few
years, the major man ufacturers have found that f it t in g v a r iou s extras to new cars is an advantage and the trend has developed so much that items that were once considered to be “extras” are now stan dard in certain cars.
Radios were once a
small luxury, but now a car without a fitted radio is at a disadvantage.
To tempt the cus
tomer, there are tinted windows, sunroofs, alloy wheels, metallic paint, digital clocks, fabric seats, headrests and air conditioning.
Some manufacturers
even go to the trouble of fitting a computer that calculates how much fuel a car is using and tells the driver when to take
it easy on the a c celerator. . All these extras can
only benefit the cusr tomer and as competi tion increases more and more extras are fitted. Last year saw the
launching of the new Mini Metro, a car that is roomy inside and ex tremely economical with it too.
There is the Ford
Fiesta, another economy car that combines adv anced engineering and style. The Vauxhall Astra is a sporty, and once again, economical hatchback. The next step up in
the market is to the larger saloon class. Opel has recently introduced a new version of the R ek o rd , which is a family or businessman’s car and has a motto of “ reliability comes as standard.” Renault and Citroen each have quali ty cars to offer too. Ford has the ever-
popular Cortina to offer. The 1600L version has for so long been Britain’s best selling car and it still continues to sell well. BL has its Princess,
claimed to be the most economical two litre saloon on. the market and Talbot has its re cently introduced Solara, a saloon version of the
Alpine hatchback. Further, up in the
market comes the dream cars . . . BMW, Jaguar, Rover and Volvo, and my favourite, the XR3 version o f the Ford Escort.
For the y oung-at-
heart and those wishing to experience open-air motoring, there are still plenty o f d rophea d sports cars to choose from. D esp ite B L ’ s recent announcement that the TR7 and MG are to be discontinued, there are still models in the showrooms. Both, no doubt, will one day be collectors items.
troduced the 280 2 + 2 sports car with a detach able roof. Then there is the economical Fiat X-19 and now there is the Mazda RX-7. And for the real enthusiast, TVR and Lotus present desir able options.

less. There are all kinds of cars for every kind of person.
Perhaps one day I will
have the chance to take delivery of a brand new model, for now I am going to keep on saving. But for those who are seriously thinking o f buying one, now is defi nitely the time to put down an X on the paper.

Finance
for your new car
OBVIOUSLY the best way to .buy a new car is with cash . . . . pound notes. H o w e v e r , n o t
everyone can lay their hands on such a large amount of money all at once, and so the most suitable alterna tive is car finance. First of all there is the
bank manager. Alterna tives are an HP, com pany or the d e a le r himself. The best advice is to
shop around for the best deal. Over the last few years, interest rates on money for new cars of fered by the dealers have dropped drastical ly. It is now a common sight to see interest rates in single figures, perhaps even- less than five per cent. Some dealers can offer
the unbeatable alterna tive of interest-free fi nance. Even if the cus tomer has the cash avail able, on a deal such as this it would be better to leave the money in the bank and use a loan. Obviously, the lower
the interest rate, the less you pay out in the lon g run. So sh op around, but do read the small print and make sure at what rate the money is being lent. Many people have cars
they would like to trade in part exchange, but once again, in such a case, cash is still the better option. Dealers offer discounts
for deals that do not in volve part-exchange. So, before deciding on
a part-exchange, try to sell the car through the classified adverts. It would pay in the end.
