I TUNING in to the airwaves of the world has. fascinated Alistair Helm since he was a little boy. ,

' Now, .at the age of 15,

he has earned the right to. broadcast himself. _

Timothy has a study date in Israel

TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Timothy Butlin, only son of the Vicar of Chatburn, Canon C. R. Butlin and Mrs Butlin, will be the first Briton to work for the Israel Trust of the Anglican Church as a student in the Holy

Land. Timothy, who 'flies to

Jerusalem on August 26th, will initially spend 12 months learning the

Hebrew language at the city’s Hebrew University. He will then move to

the Immanuel House Study Centre, Tel Aviv, for at least the next three years, to research into theological issues current ly confronting Christians

in Israel. M a n c h e s t e r - b o r n

Timothy studied theology at Durham University. After gaining a teaching certificate at Oxford, he took a post as a religious education teacher at St W i l f r id ’s S e co n d a ry School, Blackburn, for four years.

He has spent the last 12

months at the Depart ment of Islamic Studies, Birmingham, in a bid to gain a working knowledge of Middle Eastern politics.

Timothy first heard

about the Trust when, 18 months ago, he took a party of children from St Wilfrid’s to Israel. There he met the Trust’s field director, resulting in the chance to go to Israel on a full-time basis.

“I am really looking'for

ward to living out there,” said Timothy. “I suppose I could be considered something of a pioneer.”

A member of St Peter’s

Church, ■Halliwell, Bolton, where his father was vicar before moving to Chatburn in November, 1979, Timothy has a home there, but has been living with his parents at the vicarage in Crow Trees Brow since returning from Birmingham last

month. Canon and Mrs Butlin

will attend a special “com missioning service” for Timothy at St Peter’s on August 23rd. Timothy is not worried

by the current political troubles in the country. Like the Trust, he is com mitted to the idea of maintaining the state of Israel and looks forward to making a practical con tribution to- this end.

. . He has passed a City | and Guilds amateurs ex amination to become one of the youngest radio “hams” in the country.

This means'he qualifies

for a licence to talk with fellow “hams” throughout Great Britain and, when he has mastered Morse code, the world will liter ally be at his fingertips!

round & about

His parents, George

and Joan Helm, who run a butcher's shop in Whalley Road, Clitheroe, are more than proud of their son's achievement and his en thusiasm has started to rub off on them.

“Both of us have been

tuning in for a while Just to listen and we are think ing about joining an amateur class,” said Mrs

Helm. Alistair, a pupil at Rib-

blesdale School, became in te r e s te d in radios through his elder brother, Peter, a keen “ham” who now lives at Leyland.

Now Alistair spends

endless hours scanning the airwaves from his radio “shack” — a bed room which houses all the vital equipment.

Over the years, he has

tuned in to messages from as far away as Australia and America.

Alistair’s hopes of re

ceiving a licence suffered a setback two years ago

when he was told he was too young to join the amateur’s course at Black burn Technical College.

Undaunted, he later

joined a class at Padiham, where for 12- months he

studied how to operate the equipment.

In fact, of the 25 mostly

adult students on the course, only eight, includ ing Alistair, passed.

A l i s ta i r , who h a s

another brother, Andrew, living in Hayhurst Street, Clitheroe, would eventual ly like to work with radios, possibly as an operator in the RAF.

His other hobbies in

clude playing the organ — he regularly entertains members at the nearby Royal British Legion Club — and diving.

Fate of an old hall

“TIME marches on” and it is true to say that a resident in our valley 100 years ago (which really isn’t a very long time) or even less, would find changes and altera tions considered quite incredible in his day

and age. Some of the greatest

changes he would-find (if by some strange alchemy he were able to return) have been wrought in the stately homes and great houses of our district. Once the homes of

families to whom every villager either curtsied or tugged the forelock, today the great houses know a very different life. ' Waddow Hall has become a Guide Training Centre, Waddington ana Winckley Halls are nurs ing homes, yet another has become a country club.

House has become a fine museum while others have degenerated — no, that’s the wrong word — have become farmhouses. Yet others, sadly, have been demolished, while others have been divided up and converted into homes for two or even three separate families. Some of these, perhaps,

are changes to be regret ted, depending on the in dividual point of view or the prevailing mood of nostalgia, although few will deny that in most in-

.stances the old houses now fulfil very useful pur poses.

As I write, the great

hall of Little Mitton is once more on the market. This, in many respects, is one of the loveliest of our old houses and once pres ided over the destinies of the residents of the com bined parishes of Henth- orn, Coldcoates and Little Mitton.

The panelled Tudor hall

with its ornate minstrels’ gallery is a wonderful piece of early' craftsman

ship. The first reference I

can find to a hall on the site goes right back to the days of Edward I, al though in the days , of Richard I the land was granted to Sir Ralph de Little Mitton and there are other, almost contem porary, references.

In the days of Edward,

however, we find that Alan de Caterall (or Cat- terall — the name is spelt differently in different ages) married Lora (or Loretta), the daughter and heiress of Richard Punchardon, of L it t le Mitton.

I t is believed that Alan

built the first hall on the site and several succeed ing generations of the family made their homes there, including the pro lific Ralph Catterall and his wife, Elizabeth, who, with their 20 children, .are commemorated in the re markable brass on the north wall of Whalley Parish Church. In later years we find

.Robert>Sherburne, of Stonyhurst (the third son of Thomas and brother, of S ir Richard) resident there when he came into
