6 Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, April 10th, 1980 ADVERTISING FEATURE BY BERT BOLTON THE JETTA AGE

IF YOU know the difference bet ween a “hatchback” and a “notch- back” then you should be able to recognise your boot from your tail gate.

I f all that is just

a little too much for you, dear reader, forgive me. It was just a neat way of my introducing you to Volkswagen’ s most recent offering to the U K car mar k et — the Jetta. The Jetta, take my

word for it, is a stylish four door, five-seater

saloon car with a boot which can only be de scribed as mammoth. The cavernous lug

gage section is where the “notch” part comes in — te rm in o lo g y aimed at distinguishing the rear end of the vehicle from the sliced- off hatchback, which has become extremely popular in rec en t years.

However, cars with

the “traditional” boot still outnumber the hatchbacks in the UK.

LUXURIOUS

The Jetta clearly*iy owes much to the Goff

— VW’s high selling hatchback. In fact, if you imagine a Golf with a “ traditional” rear end, boot lid and

all, then you have the Jetta. . Like the Golf, the Jetta comes in a wide va r iety of models, ranging from a 1300 cc. version with “L” trim, to a luxuriously fitted out 1600 cc, fuel-injec tion GLi model which will top 110 mph. Vol kswagen also intends to market a model equipped with its world-selling diesel engine.

POSITIVE Let me say, here

and now, after only a fairly brief acquaint ance with the model,

local Volkswagen main dealers, Martins, of Accrington Road, I am more than impressed with its performance, style — and the solid manner in which it has been packaged. I found the 1500 cc

through the goodwill of • • Vo-

version extremely flex ible and responsive.

On the road it be

haved impeccably, clinging like a leech through tight • corner ing. All controls fell comfortably — and naturally — to hand. Gear changes were sweet and positive. The instruments

were easy to read and the in t e r io r was roomy, with plenty of knee space in the rear. There was plenty of

neat little parcel shelf for the front seat pas senger. The glove box was small.

Engine noise, when

pushing, was “there” — but not maddeningly so. All in all, a very

satisfying, and com fortable, car.

Volkswagen say the

Jetta has been de signed for low-cost maintenance. The gear-

box, steering gear, suspension ana wh bearings, for instance,

eel-

are “care” free. Fit and forget, in fact. T h e . gearbox and clutch can be whipped tou ching

out without the

engine. Front

wings are bolt-on for easy replacement, and other body panels are sectioned for low-cost repairs. Thehe entire body shel-

has a claimed 92 mph top speed — naughty! — costs £4,080, includ ing taxes in the “L ” version and £4,516 for the “GL” and will eke out 30 miles to the gallon at a constant 75 miles an hour . . . but don’t get caught, or, if you do — don’t blame me.

particularly impressive in its fuel consumption, bearing in mind its high performance — 0 to 60 in 9.5 seconds

“WE KEEP THEM THE WAY THEY’RE B UILT ” — is the claim of our service department, and that’s no easy task in these days of ever increasing sophistication in the workings of a motor car. Traditional ways are giving in to electronic diagnosis computers, and, we’re proud to say, we are still able to make our claim.

But why not come and find out for yourself, because despite rising labour costs and materials' prices, we have fixed the price of servicing and certain repairs at 1979 levels, and we will hold them there until July 31st, 1980.
