Cut out rancour towards council
THE rancour and antipathy displayed toward the Ribble Valley Borough by Mr Bill Har greaves last week, and Mr Prank Moon and the Town Mayor of Clitheroe almost continuously, make me wonder why they have not initiated a movement for UDI.
LAST
WORD I DISLIKE newspaper arguments that go on week after week, if only because such prolongation usually means that the correspon dents are unable or unwil ling to grasp one another’s point and go on tediously merely in an attempt to have the last ego-salving word.
(ego-salving!) word that I consider I covered Mr Booth’s point about availa bility in the- first para graph of my letter:— that I cannot, believe private enterprise would be willing to do what the nationalised industry, on essentially private business grounds, is unwilling to do.
It is therefore, my last
Of course, if starry-eyed with the virtues of the
Srivate-enterprise system,
it is unlikely that any number of letters from me will change his vision.

Women footballers mourn manager
MEMBERS of Clitheroe Ladies’ FC have started a collection among their fel low players in. the NW Women’s League to buy a cup in memory of Henry Bolton MacMillan, their team manager, who died on Thursday at the age of 59.
Ribblesdale View, Chat- bum, founded the team six years ago. Born in Glasgow, he
will also be contributing to the fund. Mr M a cM i l lan , of
Friends and relatives
came to the Clitheroe area 31 years ago, and recently completed 30 years as a process worker at ICI, where he was also a works councillor. Mr MacMillan was a member of the Clitheroe Caledonian Soci ety and the town’s Central Working Men’s Club, Whalley Road. A service and cremation
took place yesterday at Accrington. Mr MacMillan leaves three children, all of whom are married.

lington, where ,the play area swings have been hanging brokien and for lorn for months, such a movement, 'if successful, would only be of financial benefit to us “outsiders.”
As a ratepayer in Bil
, united borough and having been closely involved in the housing strategy of the borough’' where I know Clitheroe has at least its fair share and probably more, of the available funds, it would seem that we “outsiders” are “feed ing the hand that bites us.” To the Little Clitheroe
undoubted, it somewhat persistent criticism, of the borough is not directed in a more practical and useful way, such as a participa tion in local government or in some effort to reform the inequitable rating system.
Party, I would saw “do the gains on the Clitheroe roundabouts make up for the losses on the Billington swings?” What-a pity Mr Moon’s
. If only he would step down from his “ ivory tower" he would realise that his idealistic “miscon ceptions” about democracy and the committee system in local government, if implemented, would lead to chaos.on the one hand and atrophy on the other.
