extravaganza. And a great deal of care

c a r p e t

ful forethought and plan ning have gone into the planning of this new show room, designed to present a more attractive setting to accommodate the latest furniture and carpet fash ions from various'parts of the world. It is unlikely that even

the oldest residents of Accrington will remember the founding of J. W. Tasker and Son Ltd., but ma n y p e o p l e ma y remember the original shop in Burnley Road, with its large clock in the window, by which many people timed their journey to work. Robert Tasker ju n .,

grandson of the founder, “J. W.” came into business in 1939, straight from school. He managed to carry enough goods in a large suitcase, either by walking or on the bus, to keep the firm going. In fac t, lie and his father, also Robert, took

every opportunity to build up the business to the heights of success it has reached today.

In 1978, when the firm

f irst moved into the Queen’s Mill, the decision was taken to discontinue selling hardware and pot tery, and to concentrate on furniture and carpets. The aim of this was to

make Tasker one of the biggest and best furniture dealers in the whole of Lancashire. A p r o g r e s s iv e and

enthusiastic management team has been formed to make sure the best poss ible use is made of the improved showroom. Under the chairmanship

of Mr Robert Tasker sen. managing director, it com bines the forward-looking outlook and flair of the younger directors, Susan Broad ley and Robert

Tasker, jun. together with the experience and exper tise of three long-serving members of staff, Joan Heap, Brian Redmayne and James Hoyle. Robert Tasker jun. is

the warehousing opera tions director and com bines an ambition to see Tasker’s right at the top of the retailing tree, together with the necessary “mus cle" to ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scene. Miss Joan Heap com

bines the post of managing director’s private secret ary with that of accounts office manager. Mr Brian

Redmayne (who, inciden tally, started as driver with the firm, and progres sed from being a travelling representative to general manager) is in charge of the newly-opened carpet shop in Blackburn Road, Accrington. Mr James Hoyle has

been with the firm most of his working life, and is in charge of the firm's vehi cles.

Tasker is very proud of

its carpet-fitting service under the expert and fas tidious direction of Mr Harry Ashworth (formerly of Hesketh’s Burnley), who guarantees to do a perfect job every time. Tasker also has a very suc cessful shop, in Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, in the old Co-op premises, which is run by Mrs Peggy Heyes.

DISPLAY This is Tasker’s Burnley

showroom, mostly for the display of Schreiber and G- Plan, but with several other furniture makes on view. Visitors will find it a really attractive place to call and see the latest designs in furniture.

Customers who see the

“Floreat" sign of furniture are aware that this is an indication of quality and value.

Tasker’s are members of

this national marketing group, which ensures lower prices for the gen eral public through bulk buying.

Many of Tasker’s sup

pliers have also been deal ing with the firm for many years, a dose connection in particular having been with the local upholstery firm C. D. Pierce and Son

date with all the latest designs and tastes in the world of fashionable furni ture.

And keeping the com

pany’s interest at heart in this sphere is Susan Broad- ley, chief administrator and furniture buyer, who has just returned from a three-week trip to the U.S.A. to learn about all the latest furniture fash ions.

She went on this trans-

States tour after winning a scholarship through the National Association of Retail Furnishers. Susan has re tu rn ed ful l of enthusiasm and ideas from various stores in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and she hopes to put these into action in the near future. America has for a long

time been one o f the forerunners in the world of high-fashion furniture, and Susan has had the chance to see la creme de la creme at its best. No doubt she will be giv

ing Tasker's customers the very best advice she has learnt from her far away travels.
