killed by ■ the However, Mrs Taylor is
confident that Laddie will prove to be a champion father, enabling her to carry on breeding from some of -his offspring. If :
. not, Mrs Taylor has a 12- week-old bitch, Lady. She is prepared to swap it for an older bitch or to wait until it is old enough to' have pups. ,. ■
Recently, Lady Mackin
tosh, of the sweet man ufacturing family, called a meeting of heeler owners. T h e y d e c id e d t h a t ’ although there are several different strains of the breed — such a s ’ the Ormskirk, 1 the Lancashire and the Welsh heeler — the animal should, fo r show purposes, measure about 14 inches from the withers to the tip of the tail.
• There was, however, ■
some dispute as to whether the f e e t : should turn inwards or outwards and what should be the correct
length of leg. Heelers apparently vary .
so much because they originated from black and
■ tans, corgis and Manches ter and Norwich terriers,. with a sp r in k l in g o f dachshund. /. Apart from being attrac
tive pets, heelers are admirable cow'd og s — hence the name — and also good ratters. : Like Mrs Taylor, other
heeler owners are keen to produce more litters and aim to have official recog nition which would allow.: the animals 'to compete at dog shows in their own
right. In her quest to gain
more: information, Mrs Taylor has telephoned dog breeders all over the coun-
MRS TAYLOR with the heelers
try. Although the Kennel' Club ■ has offered her no encouragement, she has had advice and support from the National Rare Breed Survival Trust; in Devon. After an appeal on local
radio, Mrs Taylor was- inundated with callers, many offering their heeler bitches to be mated , with Laddie. Now Mrs Taylor is hope
ful there could soon be the patter of tiny paws to help the cause along.
