TWO of ■ the area’s young farmers are back home this | week after judging in the Royal Smithfimd Agricul­ tural Show, at Earls Court, London.


G e o rg e Whitwell, of


Pendleton, and John-Hand- ley, of Dunsop Bridge, were among two of the three pairs sent by Lancashire Young Farmers’ Clubs. 'They were selected after a series of eliminating rounds. During the three-day


competition, the 200-odd entrants had to judge sheep and calves, both as live animals and carcases. Even though none of the


county’s teams won, all six representatives gained some useful experience.

Dies on eve


of 35th wedding anniversary


A PART-TIME courier for the Ribble Valley | Council, Mr Albert Burgess has died two days before his 35th wedding anniversary. Mr'Burgess (68) had worked-at the Castle offices a n ^ ?®t“ ing | in September as credit controller for TGB Motors, Woone Lane, Clitheroe.

ality, he had made many friends in Clitheroe since he


left Manchester. He took a keen interest in


most sports, but his favour­ ite pastime was imdoubtedly snooker. He was a regular attender of the snooker nights at Uie Pendle Club, Clitheroe, and only last week visited the county championships at Blackpool. Mr Burgess was also a


member of the Ribblesdale Sports Club and enjoyed .watching cricket, as well as


joining m at bowls. He was taken ill with a


heart attack aF a- social club', and died later in Black- bum Royal Infirmary. A service will be held this


morning at Accr ington Crematorium. He leaves a wife, Rene.
