IT was Waddington’s big in the Lancashire Best-I . Village contest on Saturday Practically the whole of thi village turned out to see their two awards handed over at a ceremony in the Coronation Gardens. The villagers walked there in procession led by Siaidburn Silver Band.
It was the first time in the
history of the contest that such a handing over ceremony
had been held out of doors. Taking part in the contest
for only the second time since the' village became part of Lancashire, Waddington took
first prize in the major class, and' the Social and Bowling Club won th e . village hall section. '■ • • '
The trophies and certifi ..•
cates were handed over by Coun. Miss Alice Alston, of Sabden,' chairman of the con test committee.

Among those in the proces
sion were the Mayor and Mayoress of the
Ribble.Valley (Coun. and Mrs Tom Robin son). Ribble Valley Council chief officers, the Vicar of Waddington (Canon C. F. Goodchild), and representa tives of Waddington’s Guides, Brownies,' Cub. Scouts, WI, . Mothers’ Union, Royal British
Legion and Parish Council. At the- presentation Mr
James Barrow, chairman of the Parish Council, said that all the other competitors had better be on their toes next year, for Waddington would be going all put for the overall championship.. Mr Barrow introduced Miss Alston, who said that the idea
of the competition was not
just to keep a village spick and span for the judging months of June and July. “Villages can be lovely all
the time and Waddington residents should keep up the good work all year round — so that the village is always beautiful for , visitors,” she said.

“NICE one Cyril” was the record being played when our photographer called in at a supper dance at Downham village hall. And judging from the smiles on our picture the event certainly matched the song. About 130 people of all ages attended and £70 was raised for the children’s Christmas party fund. Music for, dancing was provided by Peter Wrigley on the organ and Keith on drums and the DD mobile disco. A buffet supper was served by Mrs A. Buckle.
Chaiirman of the Lancashire
Local Councils Association, Mr David Howorth, said Wad dington was the first village to have wrested the village hall award from his home parish of Warton, winners for the past three years.
Miss'Alston unveiled the
