games produced in the league for some time, with plenty of goals allied to a high level of

KING’S ARMS became champions of the Ribble Valley Football League by beating Chatburn in a thrilling title play-off at Shawbridge, on Friday. I t was one of the best

skill. And it was fitting that

ship, Penman, Peel (J), Rimmer, Taylor (Ray), Pyc, Peel (R), Smith, Speak, Taylor (Rod). Chatburn: Johnson, Nadm, Dob

King’s Arms: O’Neill, Blcnkin-

King’s captain John Rimmer . should receive the trophy from league president George Braithwaite, for Rimmer’s was the outstanding perform ance for the victors as he held their defence together under severe pressure. But an evenly balanced

match had to go into extra time before being decided — and even then only a fingertip save by King’s keeper Mick O’Neill stopped Chatburn equalising in the very last

minute. In front of a 200 crowd,

King’s Arms scored first, mid way through the first half. But they lost the lead to a soft goal within two minutes, and were not to regain it until the 116th minute. Two minutes after their

equaliser, Chatburn scored again to go 2-1 up. This was a fine goal by A. Dobson, who let fly while on the run, leav ing O’Neill with no chance. The goals see-saw con

tinued into the second half, with Rod Taylor equalising for King’s with a fine shot into the top corner from outside the penalty area. Chatbum went • back into

the lead with an own goal, but five minutes from the end of

normal time King's Arms scrambled an equaliser to

force an extra 30 minutes. In extra time both defences

held out until; with just four minutes left, Peel pulled a good ball back from the by line for George Smith to slot home the winner for Kings Arms.

Dukinficld 2, Ciithcroc FC 2

CLITHEROE'S final match of the season turned out to be a fast, excit ing game, considering that neither team had anything at stake. The first half was all Clithcroe's

and they should have had more than just the one goal from the penalty, spot by Tony Monks. Payton and GiUibrand went close with a few good ef for ts and the Dukinfield ’keeper was forced to make a number of good saves. Although CUtheroe still led after th e interval, Dukinficld started

when a shot was deflected past

playing much better. But they scored a lucky equaliser

Onyon off John Kirk, playing in defence for the absent Eddlcstone. Dukinficld took the lead when

right-winger Smith headed a good goal from a left wing centre. But

Clitheroe were not to be outdone and Geoff Payton scored the equaliser when he ran onto a through ball from 18-year-old David Fisher, who was making his debut. Ciithcroc: Onyon, Beard, Kirk,

GiUibrand, C. Monks, D. Birkett, Bisby, Hinksman, Fisher, Payton, T. Monks.

Waddiegton Reserves 2, Koyal Oak 3

IN another of their last games Waddington Reserves went down to Royal Oak, who were inspired by a brilliant per formance from Eddie Preedy. It was Preedy who put

Royal Oak ahead after only two minutes. But two goals by Salisbury for Waddington, against one more for the vis itors by Aspinwall, kept the game level at half-time. In a second half which was a

CHALLENGE FROM THE POLICE

CLITHEROE Police are on the lookout for some opposi tion . . . for their cricket team. The side, which had several

games last season, is willing to s t a g e fr ien d ly matches

against any local sides this summer. Explained one of the organisers, PC Barrie Parker: "We would probably have to play our games on midweek evenings or Sundays. We can usually raise a team and we don’t reckon our standard is too bad.1' , The team has already fixed

up several matches and on Saturday met a Calderstones team at Calderstones. The outcome was a victory for the police, who dismissed the hos pital side for 69 and then went on to score 70 for four wic kets. This Sunday, a combined Calderstones and Police team takes on Colne police division, at Calderstones. Games have also been arranged against Clitheroe CC and the Fire Brigade. Any other teams who would

like to fix up a match should contact PC Parker, PC Fred Booth or PC Brendan Hillary.
