A LONG RUN FOR CHARITY

A- GROUP of Clitheroe footballing teenagers, are combining a six-mile training session with a run for charity a fortnight on Saturday.

The aim of the lads — all

members of the Henthom United under-15 team — is to run 20 times round a third of a mile course, keeping them selves fit and at the same time helping the work of Christian Aid.

in the Accrington and district under-15 league, decided' to hold a training run on a day when they had no match. Then they thought again and came up with the idea of help ing others while helping them selves.

Mr Taylor, who is chairman Said Mr Taylor: “These lads

came up with the fund-raising idea on their own initiative and I am hoping they will be well-supported. They will be sponsored for the speed in which they can complete the course — around the Central Avenue, Henthorn Road, Whipp Avenue and Kemple View block.— and Christian Aid officials will be keeping a strict check on the timings.-” Sponsor forms for the run,

which starts at 10-30 a.m., can be obtained from Mr Taylor or any of the team members.

LOCAL: winners were fewand far between at the' Ribble Valley Poultry Society’s annual show, on Saturday, but the,Palmer family, of Buck House, Paythorne, certainly held their owii. Mrs Betty Palmer, who the caravan park at Payth-

spccialiscs in Old English Game bantams, carried away four firsts, five seconds and a third prize. Her 12-year-old son Simon,

a pupil at Barnoldswick Sec ondary Modern School, won the Douglas Mason Cup for the best children’s exhibit with a male bantam which also took a first in its class. Winning prizes is nothing

new to the family, for only the previous week Mrs Palmer returned from the country’s premier show at London with a first prize for the best black and red bantam cock in the show. ; This bird has itself won 40 prizes and considering that Mrs Palmer keeps about 70 bantams, it isn’t . surprising that she can’t remember the number of awards she has taken home. Mrs Palmer began showing poultry about four years ago,

. when a friend suggested she take some bantams she had been keeping on land behind her house to a local show. From such humble begin

nings she began to take a real interest in the hobby, bought her own incubator and is now in a-position to sell off some of her champion stock. She puts her success down

to the fact that she is able to give a little more attention to her birds than her male coun terparts. . “They have to be- clean and

in good show condition and the hard-feathered' varieties I keep need to have special care,” said Mrs Palmer, whose husband David is manager of

orne. Among other local people to

sample success were a group of residents from Calder-

.stones Hospital. Their ducks, which are kept at the hospi tal's bird sanctuary, won first prizes in each of the two duck sections. Vi c e - cha i rman of the

Teewood Farm, Waddington, won first prize for a plate of three white bantam eggs. The show, at Clitheroe Auc

Poultry Society committee, Mr David Kay, of Osbaldes- ton, won rosettes for the best Hamburgh and Sebright ban tams in the show and three first prizes. M rs C . N ew sam, of

tion Mart, attracted 731 entries and a record number of visitors. Prizes were presented by

Mr-S. Stirling, head of the Pendlc View livestock section at Calderstoncs.

Raise £45

ABOUT 120 people attended the Clitheroe area WI show committee’s annual whist and domino drive at Downturns vil lage hall. The event raised £45, which will go towards next year’s

show. Whist winners: Ladies —

Mrs A. Boothman, Miss M. Jackson, Mrs M. Crossland, Mrs E. Berry. Gents — Mr W. Moorhouse, Mr J. Swailes, Mr A. Allan, Mrs W. Smith. Dominoes: Mrs A. Ellis,

Mrs A. Eccles, Mr L. Under wood, Mr T. Pye.

Not plaques but replicas

CLITHEROE Town Council could be breaking the Trades Descriptions Act if it sells its coat of arms bearing the w o r d s “ B o r o u g h , o f Clithcroe.”

The clerk, Mr L. D. Tel

-ford, reported that the council might be breaking the law if it sells the plaques, as the Clitheroe Borough Council is no longer in existence.

To overcome the problem,

members decided to sell the plaques as replicas.
