CONERON AND LEEMING is one of only 25 shops in the country which boasts a display of Heredities bronze figures. The sculptured figures — lions, tigers, dogs, eats and other animals in motion — are examples of a new bronze casting process developed a few years ago by the, Cumbria firm of Heredities. The’cost of the figures ranges from £5, to £170 for an example by the distinguished Austrian sculptor William Timym. But whatever your buying power, the exhibition
is well worth a visit. , ," " / k 1 $> <v > a v v v TV r- *> . *<? > . „-5 •■ - ' , - r . * ' < * • ■ - - 0 I0 'Hf)
A family firm for three generations
IN one respect the jewel; lery shop at No. 17 Moor Lane, is like Pendle Hill —: it’s always-been there. I t all began round
about the time “Jack the Ripper” was perpetrating his evil deeds in London
• town, when a quiet young . man named Christopher Coneron decided to start a business m Clitheroe. He chose Moor Lane as the
site for his business — but further down the street than
' the present shop — at No. 47. He found that trade was brisk and when the premises at No. 17 became vacant, in 1898, Mr Coneron moved shop.
Partnership The shop continued to
prosper and Mr Coneron’s daughter Mary— by his mar riage to Miss Elizabeth Rudd in 1890 — passed examina tions which entitled her to practise as an optician. She joined her father in
business, opening lip an opti cian’s section which was'des- tinod tn survive for half a

, Business continued to do well even through the. rigours of the General Strike and the depression of the 1930s. I n . June 1933, Mary Coneron married Walter Leeming, also ' an optician, and thus was born the Coneron and Leeming
partnership. Counter

the family business from the time I was tall enough to peep ‘ over the counter,” he said. “In the early days I can
remember that prices were far more stable, although I vaguely recall that the war years were pretty grim.”

extensions to the premises when the china department wqs enlarged. And this year the latest extensions were carried out, utilising some spare space behind the previ

a more roomy appearance, for the recent development has doubled the total floor area and trebled the size of the jewellery department. This is the latest chapter in
Henr/Griffith MR CONERON,
the story of one of Clitheroe’s oldest family concerns. It is a tale, of continued success which Mr Leemingis confident will, be maintained for many years to come.
