Engaged couple star in festival winner

Alan Jones, it was the day they became engaged — after playing the parts of a young couple whose arranged mar riage never took place in “Son net for a summer dav.”

Unfortunately the author of

the play, Vivian Paget, was unable to be there to share in the group's triumph. His part in the production had to be taken by the producer, and this meant several last minute cuts being made in the script.

Adjudicator Mr Bernard

Prentice, making his first visit to Clitheroe, said that maybe the standard of plays had not been as high as he had antici pated but the important thing was that people enjoyed the theatre.

In the official party which

presented the awards were. the Ribble Valley Mayor and Mayoress, Coun. and Mrs Fred Singleton; the Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe, Coun. and Mrs Leo Wells; and the chairman of the Drama Festival Committee, Coun. Richard Turner.

Thanking the adjudicator,

organisers, staff and audi ences, Coun. Singleton said that there had been record attendances at the festival. It was now becoming known fu r th e r a f ie ld , but he appealed for still more pat rons to give their support next year.

intrigue and murder, Wednes day night’s play, “Tell Tale Murder,” kept the audience guessing until the last minute. Mr Prentice liked much of Gargrave Dramatic Society’s set, but felt that the stage was underlit at times, giving more dimness than was necessary to the “ cold, cold theme.”

“Thrice Crowned Head” by the Broughton Players had degrees of .problems in pre sentation, said Mr Prentice, and without good lighting was inclined to become a documen tary. He praised the superb* costumes, which showed “.a degree of devotion and love of theatre.”

Thursday’s performance of The only comedy of the

week, Alan Ayckbourn's “How the other half loves,” on Friday, was, according to Mr Prentice, tricky to perform. He tempered his praise for the Norcross Players, of Thornton Cleveleys, with con structive criticism of lighting, timing and dress.

The poll totalled only 32.3 per cent — or as one candidate commented after wards, 68 people out of every 100 didn’t even bother to vote. He commented: “My oppo

It may sound magnanimous but at least they made the effort to vote. It is rather sad that so many others did not even bother to turn out.” Seconding the v o te .o f

but to try and break the apathy. I clearly haven’t suc ceeded. I just hope that people will vote in greater numbers at next month’s C o m m o n M a r k e t referendum.”
