in © Read 137 for 8 dec, Clitheroe 135 for 9.

A MATCH which Clitheroe should have won came to life in the last half-hour, producing a cliffhanger finish in which both sides had the opportunity to take four points.

Read had been put in to bat

on a soft wicket which was more than a little unreliable. The outfield, slow at first,

gradually dried out 'malting ru n s a l it t le e a s ie r t o c om e b y .

The home team were soon

in. trouble, losing Georgeson and Fairclough to Boden

before either had a chance to a s se s s the pitch or the bowling. H in d l e , m e a n w h i le ,

attacked the bowlingmaking a hard-earned. 30 before falling lbw to Birch, who had previ ously dismissed Ranson.

At the other end, Gee -was

playing an excellent contain ing role, bowling eight overs

for 19 before taking a wicket when he caught and bowled Goodway.

After this, Clitheroe began

to lose their grip and useful innings from Kavalec, W ad- ' dington and Sumner together with a responsible unbeaten 28 from M. Grainger, who anchored the innings, took Read to 137 for 8 at which they declared. Birch was Clitheroe’s most

successful bowler, but Gee deserves credit for a long bowling s t in t with final figures of'one for 25 in 14 oyors. The visitors started well in the field but as time went by their performance deteriorated, several chances going down.

t With so few runs in the

bank, Wanderers" attack n e v e r had- a reasonable chance. Greenhalgh and Wil son put on 45 for the first wicket and after-Wilson had gone,, Plant helped to finish off the job.' • Greenhalgh, unbeaten with 29, won the game with a four off Proctor's first ball, which was'a mere formality. Bar- noldswick had taken 53 minutes for their 63 for 1. In Wanderers’ favour it can

be said that there is no despondency; nothing more than perhaps a'wry feeling that the fates are in a teasing mood. But the season is still

young. Everyone is keen to see

new professional Jones in action on a hard wicket. Even on Saturday's“ sponge” he. made the ball come through at a good pace. As one Church Meadow veteran said: “He’ll

do all right.” . Wanderers have a chance of

revenge on Sunday. They travel to Bamoldswick for the first round of the Ramsbot-

tom Cup. RIBBLESDALE WANDER

start to the reply,, they reco vered and began to look threatening. *

After two overs,.Read lost

the services of Newby with a back injury, and Waddington called on Goodway to fill the breach. .

' A sound innings by Gee,who

took full advantage of any lo o s e b ow l in g , h e lp e d Clitheroe to a good position. Neil Duckworth and Michael Oldham gave valuable assist ance at this time and at 101 for 4 Clitheroe seemed set for victory.' .

' ' r'

A t this point the--whole game appeared to seize up.

The batsmen were content to survive and the fieldsmen were in no particular hurry. Time went on, as times does, and as a result of several bowling chances Clitheroe slumped to 109 for 7.

The match came to life once more as Graham Monk tried

valiantly to make up for time lost by others. The extra overs were claimed; Clitheroe then‘needing 18 to win. Nine were required from the last three overs. An excellent maiden by Waddington and some missed opportunities by the visitors, together .with the fall of a' further two wickets, produced a situation where with the last men at the wic ket, three runs were required for victory. Alas for both sides and their supporters, victory eluded them.

Read’s fielding was margi

nally better than Clitheroe’s, Hindle taking a good catch, alth ou gh se v e ra l oppor tunities were missed.

However, while credit must

be given to Clitheroe for claiming the overs in an effort to win, the town team must regret that complacent, half- hour which may have cost them another three points. 1 As for Read, they still seek their first victory, but they played well under pressure and must not be too despon dent. Teamwork needed

AFTER a good home game against Lancaster University which resulted in a 2-2 draw, Clitheroe Ladies’ Football Club had less luck in the
