LANCASTER FIGHT FOR A DRAW AT CLITHEROE.

A MISSED PENALTY.

to work an opening for his colleagues, lie was unceremoniously brought down and many free kick* 'were* given against Lan caster for fouls in the closing stages. Tt must be admitted that Clithoroo never rote to the heights they did the previous week at Lancaster, hut at the same time they gave quite a good display and with a bit of luck would have won.

The equalising goal had obviously upset Lancaster who fell off considerably only the backs playing any thing like the vigorous game which charac terised the opening stages. Following a scramble near the corner a surprise shot by Akers went a yard wide. Millar centred behind goal from .a difficult angle and Bell saved brilliantly from a corner at the other end. Chathurn was robbed in dashing through, the Lancaster backs giving him few chances. Tackled just

threatened Lancaster when Newton passed hack badly and there was a race between Bell and Dawson for the ball, the goal keeper winning. Play was transferred quickly from end to end, but Lancaster at this stage were the more dangerous, swing ing the ball about with real judgment, Clitheroe were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area and Chntburn was inches wide with a terrific shot. Glorious combination down the right wing led to goal for Lancaster, Rhodes swiftly heading through from Millar’s pass after 13 minutes. Another free kick for Clitheroe in a similar position was cleared. Grand work by Aden and Dawson took the ball up and Chatbnrn made no mistake with the centre

of the homo spectators set Clitheroc to play towards the Shaw Bridge goal. Lancaster set the pace and went down the field in grand style. Grass passed beautifully to Millar who sent the hall across the field to Edmondson whose shot went across the goal. on Saturday at the Shaw Bridge ground for the heavy defeat Clitheroe inllicted upon them the previous week, although they forced a draw. As was generally expected, a thrilling game resulted from "the second meeting of these teams and the spectators were kept on tenterhooks the whole ninety minutes. After twice being in arrears, Clitheroe got on level terms and there was a thrilling climax when Clitheroe were awarded a penalty which Chatham failed to ' convert. The penalty award followed an amazing scene in the Lancaster goal- month after a corner kick taken by Hors- field. ^ The ball was dropping under tlio bar with the goalkeeper helpless when a Lancaster player fisted the hall over. im mediately the referee awarded a penalty, but the Lancaster players surged round him protesting strenuously and it was some little time before order could be restored. It was a big disappointment to Clitheroe’s supporters that Chatburn; who was probably ■upset by the tactics of the Lancaster players, tailed to score. On the balance of play a draw was a fair result, although Clitheroe exerted strong pressure in the closing stages and were unfortunate in not getting at least one penalty in the first half when two players were‘badly brought down at close quarters. It was evident from the outset that Lancaster were not going to surrender without a fierce struggle and no little amount of vigour was infused into their play. "When Clitheroe were gaining the upper hand in the closing stages, Lancaster resisted with every ounce of effort they possessed and after the ball bad been out of plav, certain players did not hesitate to waste as much time as they could. In addition, on several occasions when a Clitheroc player had dribbled neatly

Allen struck a defender with a grand drive and Lancaster were onco more finding themselves hard put to it to keep out the lively Clitheroe forwards. booting the ball first time ami giving tho Clitheroc defence an anxious time, but their finishing was by no means as effective as their midfield play. A glorious pass from Chatburn to Dawson eluded the winger. Lancaster had remarkable escape when Bell just managed to divert a header from Chatburn for a corner. Again Bell saved well from Chatham's head. When Akers was going through nicely on the wing he was fouled by Edmondson. Clitberoe wore given a corner when Bell carried the ball over the line. There was plenty of excitement, but Lancaster were unfortun ntoly not particular as to their methods of defence. .Hnrsfiold had tho worst luck when a fn>t-iimo shot struck the goalpost Tn attempting to pull up Allen Grass brought him heavily down again just out side the penalty area and Chathurn was inches only ton high* with his shot. and made several sparkling saves. The backs kicked well and in the intermediate lino Crompton and Grass were outstanding. Millar was the most dangerous attacker on account of his fine turn of speed and ho got plenty of support. McKcnnnn led the line well and Rhodes was an improvement on Parker tho previous week. Not one player spared lumself and Lancaster did

their best to lower Clitheroe’s colours. Tho team as a whole could he congratulated on the accuracy of its passing and the for wards on their fine open movements, hut the players detracted from the merit of their exhibition by tlicir unsportsmanlike tactics in the closing stages.
