. , .Ml the tableaux are most beautifully and . artistically arranged, whether they consist of three,
-. or in some cases 300 or JOO individuals. The sing ing was fair, the male voices being somewhat
. superior to the females. ■ The music would not be particularly
e.asy to learn, and had a resemblance ; to Haydn’s compositions. The band and chorus

As you have not witnessed the performance, it
would not interest you if I entered at any length in a criticism of the merits of the leading actors in the drama.’ Joseph Mayer, as Christ, was to me a little disappointing.- In thinking about him
, since my return, I am reminded that everyone has his own conception of the appearanceaiid physical
,- attributes of our Lord, and it is not surprising that
' 1 Mayer should not come up to the requirements of that conception. I will leave lady writers to gash about his manly bearing, his depth of son! shining
through his eyes, his majesty, dignity, grace, and so forth. Joseph Mayer has played the part four
., times. 111, 1870-71, (the- play was interrupted in 1870 by the Franco-German war), in I860, and 1890, and at -f7 years of age was really too old for the part. About 33 would of course be the proper
_ age. Probably ho played it as well, if not better, than any other man living, but still there, was something wanting. He had, I must admit, one . magnificent merit, he did not overdo liis part. In
1 no single word or gesture did he offend the most sensitive spectator. This is where a professional actor would undoubtedly fail. Professionals would a c t ; they would adopt the conventional tones, gestures, and mannerisms, which, however appro priate elsewhere, would be out of place in the representative of tlie Saviour. The other parts which allow of the most dramatic action, and give most scope to, the natural abilities of the per-
, formers are the Virgin Mary, Caiaphas, (he high priest ;^NathaniaeI, a young priest; Judas Iscariot;
and Pontius Pilate ; and they were all Ihost ably filled. ,

, i f - l mention how Judas's death was acted at Ober Ammergau, up to comparatively recent times,, It is recorded (I think in the Acts of the
.--Apostles) that when Judas attempted to hang himself the rope broke, and he foil down and his
bowels gushed ,out,. This was a fine, opportunity
, for the medimval stage manager, and in an old copy of the Passion Play, in the possession of
r-the burgomaster, the stage directions arc,',that when Judas falls down he is to let fly a black bird which he had concealed under his clothes, to

spend their money; lavishly} not .only for food and accommodation, but also in tips and presents, and in purchases: of-.; carved- .work, books, photos, mementos, etc., then the simple but honest peasant
cannot.help but.realise that the play can be made .a very'profitable business; and that the carrying
- out of a religious vow-may be beneficial, not only to his soul but also to his pocket, and those lofty and noble feelings ' .which now inspire the production ' of the Passion Play, may' give place to the sordid greed of money making. Whether this will happen, time alone will tell, it-should, then British and American gold will have helped to ruin them,
as.it has already, in one sense, helped to ruin parts of Ireland, Scotland, Norway, and other now popular tourist resorts. 1 do not think they have been contaminated sp^far. True, I may'not be very competent to judge; speak of the people ns I found them, and I wish to think well of them. For them and for their play I have nothing-but the highest praise; and putting on one side all argumentative matters, hope it will be repeated for many years to come, and give to thousands of others that satisfaction which I have expressed. Still, I do not forget that there is another side to the question, and by .way of conclusion, I cannot dp , better than adopt the language of ArchdcaconcFarrar, when he says, “ This humble ilower from the middle ages , has lived on as it were, in the crevice of its native rock; but it is doubtful whether it can long keep its bloom and fragrance in the changed atmosphere and changing soil.” The old Order changelh, giving place to new. And God .fulfils himself in many ways, Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
