SPEECHES BYC. S. ROUND ELL, AND J . T. BRENARD, Esqrs.

Gisburn, on Wednesday evening, in support of tlic candidature of C. S. Roundell, Esq., J .P ., for tlie Skipton Parlianioutary Division. IV, Tomlinson, Esq., of Sawley occupied tlic chair, and there were also prc.sout, on tho platform J . T. Brcnard Esq. of tho National Reform Union, 2\Ianchei.ler, I\Ir. Isaac B ar rett, Horton, and J l r James Duckwortli Gisburn. There was a large attendance.

A public meeting was licld in the Town Hall

pliAisc, said he was glad to have the privilege of addressing tlie people of Gisburn. He had taken an active part in the woric of Ids jiarty previously. On this occasion lie would Jiave jircforrcd to serve oil the County Council of Clicsliire. but the im- jiortancc and the soul-stimiig nature of the question of Home Rule, and the pressure brouglit to bo.ar upon him by Iiis friends, liad indnoed h.un to stand aa their candidate. The speaker then proceeded to give a brief resume of tho liistory of the Irish Question, from the very commencement of tlic coercive laws. Irol.and, lie said was a groat C.atholic country, threc-fonrths of the entire pop- uiatum being Catholics. Ireland was purely de pendant upon its Agriculture. Out of tho 500,000 cnancics, .300,000 wore tliosc of small teiiaiUs, wlio tilled a few acres of land for a part of the ye.ir. .and supplemented their incomes by devoting the remainder of their time to other pursuits. About 200,000 of rhese lonaius pay a rental of not more than £15 per annum, and there were scores whose rental was not more than £ I per ammm. Ho llicn went uu to compare tlic positions of the British fanners and tlie Insli tenant, and to foretell some of tlio ch.anges in the condition of the latter which would resifit from the passing of a Home Rule Bill. He believed m Local Self Government for Ireland, and was anxious to see that part of Great Britain as con tented as tho rest. He was really ashamed that we w-ero compelled to keep such a largo army of police in Ireland, and he asked Iiis audience how tlicy would like a proportion of policemen in Gisburn equal to one in twenty-five. Ho denounced tho evictions wliicli wore being carried out even wiiile he was speaking. Ho hojied that all wlio heard him would vote a t tlio next election straight for Home Rule. With reference to matters nearer home, ho w.as in favour of Village Councils, and believed villages had as mucii right to manage tlicir own affairs ns liad the mhabitants of large towns. The speaker then recited a number of measures which had been passed by tlie Liberal Tarty, and sat down amidst applause.

Z\Ir. Roundcll, wdio was received witli loud ap-

said he was an Irishman, born in England, Ho always began to feel warm when he thought of the cruelties which wore being perpetrated in Ireland. Tho Irish people were being driven into the ground and were fast dwindling away. I f the people listening to him could only sec the things winch were being done m Ireland, they would rise up m indignation and protest against it. He would puss round a picture which would make tiiciii feel indig nant, I t was of an old man, 80 years of ago, who had paid Ins rent regularly up to his 7Dth year, nnd because lie could not pay on his sOth, ho was turned out of his house. He had crept back to tho Iiouse. and was lying witli his head on the doorstep, thinking he would rather die Ihore timn anywhere else. Ho (Mr. Brcnard) urged his hearers to vote straight for !Mr. Roumlell; and so liclp to grant peace and happincsB to Ireland (loud checr.-i). One uf the audience here rose and asked a ques

Ho was a t one time a tenant of Mr. Roumlcirs, and could hunesl- ly say that ho was a “ good sort ” He (the speaker) was in favour of both village and district councils. He moved the following resolution:—“ That this meeting conlially wclcome.s Mr. Roundell to Gisburn, and, having heard his speech, heartily approves of the opinions ho’has experienced.” This resolution was supported by J lr .
