OFFSHORE WIND FARMS & RENEWABLES Specialist Medical Support for Offshore Teams
What is being done in the industry to provide specialist medical support for offshore teams, and what can be done to prevent injuries and subsequent delays on offshore wind farms.
How we have protected the lives of offshore teams Dave Thompson, Director of UK Sales, Remote Medical
International
For all major subsea and offshore projects, establishing safe working conditions and providing on-site expert medical care is essential.
The injuries sustained from accidents at offshore sites can be devastating, if not fatal. While the number of major incidents is thankfully decreasing each year, it remains mission critical for remote offshore operations to ensure the health and safety of their personnel, including controlling the spread of diseases and infections such as COVID. This is where the wide-ranging health and medical support of companies like Remote Medical International (RMI) becomes indispensable.
OFFSHORE WIND SUPPORT Offshore energy delivery and maintenance operations are situated in volatile and hard-to-reach environments, where risks include extreme weather, structural failures, equipment failures and electrical hazards. So, RMI’s highly trained medics become invaluable members of the team at sites like the Hohe See Wind Farm near Germany, for example, putting their expertise and experience working in often sub-zero extreme weather conditions to good use and helping to keep operations running.
Our medical professionals are integral to the overall wellbeing of offshore teams, maintaining each crew’s vessel with medical equipment and a medical inventory management system. Most crucially, they are on hand to build trust and provide rapid first response and emergency medical care for wind turbine personnel.
There is always the possibility that someone will be injured inside a turbine and our offshore wind medics have all completed Global Wind Organisation training, meaning that they are able to climb up inside the nacelle, provide emergency care and then retrieve the injured party. This helps to limit the number of cases that require referral to further medical care onshore, saving time and resources, as well as allowing the worker to return to work as soon as possible.
COVID TESTING AND SCREENING The smooth running of offshore and subsea operations depends on many different types of assistance. During a pandemic, the industry’s needs span from the delivery of COVID pre-mobilisation testing at ports and harbours, to on-site COVID audits, and virtual consultancy for offshore personnel. We have also provided
medics, specialised in infection control, to accompany staff with COVID or suspected COVID back to shore from offshore sites.
RMI provides onboard medical services supporting offshore energy projects, such as walk to work vessels, cable laying vessels, oil rigs, and seismic vessels. Our medics keep day-to-day treatments onboard limiting the requirement for referrals to onshore doctors. With our team of over 200 highly qualified medics, we are well set to offer around-the-clock services.
This type of remote support is what enables crucial offshore operations to continue all year round, despite the pandemic and the ongoing challenges of working in remote locations, and we expect to support many more organisations as they navigate these hurdles in the growing offshore sectors.
