The fascination of Amber goes back millennia having taken 50 million years to get to the pieces that we see today, much of the amber that is made into jewellery is primarily from The Balic but, we have had deposits in Britian (in 1950 a piece was found in Gough’s Cave, Somerset – this had travelled from the Baltic when we were joined to Europe). If you are asking what tree this rough brown – yellow stone comes from it is the pine tree. The tree uses the sap to help heal a wound. Flowing out trapping organic matter, insects that happen to be in the way. Eventually the sap turns hard, the tree has healed its wound the deposit will fall to the ground taking it on its journey by water to then become part of the earth.
This stone may not have the sparkle of a diamond but do not dismiss it out of hand. If you are lucky enough to have seen a piece with an insect within it or even the remains of leaves the excitement of looking into the past is precious. A window into a time when the world was such different place.
