Of course, November is perfect tulip planting time, as putting them in the ground later in the season can prevent the development of the fungal disease, tulip fire. Perch Hill has a passion for tulips and is currently the subject of much bulb planting activity as thoughts turn to the stunning displays they will provide in 2025. Sarah told us of some of her favourites which include the classic bright orange fragranced ‘Ballerina’ – recently subject to an AGM award in the RHS tulip trials at Wisley, judged by myself and a team of fellow forum members. ‘Ice Stick’ was another recipient of Sarah’s praise, again subject to an AGM, tall and elegant, one of the first to appear and reliably perennial to boot.
As with many good gardens, here you’ll find a series of rooms, from the The Oast Garden with its bold, saturated colours and strong shapes, to the Perennial Cutting Garden where the main dahlia beds and trials are situated, hand in hand with a mass of jolly annuals. Mr McGregor’s Patch provides a delicious mix of vibrant veg such as the bright orange ‘Potimarron’ squash alongside its elongated relative ‘Tromboncino’, perfect for soups and roasted vegetable dishes on chilly November evenings.
Open for 26 days a year, your special trip would not be complete without a visit to the scintillating shop, home to a vast array of products, perfect for any gardener or florist. The impressive selection of miniature vases, lined up in colour blocks, rather like a botanical balayage, really caught my eye. The Flower Wall was another memorable encounter, where flowers and vegetables, currently at their best in the garden, are displayed alongside their seed packets, where available.
Make the journey east and you’ll not be disappointed!
If, however, a trip to Sussex is not on your agenda, you need not leave the comfort of your sitting room, as all of these quality products are available online at
www.sarahraven.com. Plants and bulbs of course are aplenty, but how about a sleek slate thermometer to monitor those winter temperatures or a gleaming new set of copper hand tools? Plus, look out for the 2024 Christmas range with delicious candy stripe jugs and pomegranate candle holders. I guarantee you’ll be raving about Sarah Raven!
