REPTON PREP PUPIL WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR GRAPHIC REIMAGINING OF CLASSIC NOVEL

98

Harriet, who is currently reading Dracula, 1984 and Animal Farm, received a signed copy of Lord of the Flies: The Graphic Novel and book vouchers for Repton Prep’s library.

The judging panel, including author Judy Golding and illustrator Aimée de Jongh, praised Harriet’s entry for expertly blending graphic novel conventions with the novel’s horror and brutality while offering a hopeful conclusion.

A talented twelve-year-old from Repton Prep has won a prestigious national competition with her bold reinterpretation of Lord of the Flies.

Harriet Maxfield Sloane claimed first prize in the competition, organised by publishers Faber and the National Literacy Trust, with Lady of the Flies—a graphic novel that reimagines survival and leadership through a female protagonist. Using striking digital illustrations, she flipped the narrative to explore how the story might unfold from a different perspective.

The competition invited young creators nationwide to reinvent William Golding’s masterpiece in innovative ways. Harriet’s win is even more remarkable given that she taught herself to use Procreate software in just a month to complete her submission.

“Lord of the Flies is my favourite book because it has an incredible storyline with a cliffhanger on every page,” Harriet said. “I wanted to explore how things might change if a girl took the leadership role on the island. I never expected to win—I just loved creatingmy novel.”
