“It’s a misconception that good food is a privilege of the well off.

“There’s a belief, given to us by the big companies, that cooking is incredibly time consuming, laborious and difficult, and we see healthy food as being more expensive; but if we think about the world of fruit and vegetables, pulses and legumes, we have some of the cheapest wholefoods, certainly in Europe.

“What we get confused about is when somebody is selling you a solution, a shortcut or a convenience with a price tag attached to that, whether it’s a healthy ready meal or a diet version of something.”

As well as doing more cooking from scratch, Chris believes we could do worse than take a leaf out of his dad’s book and grow some of our own food.

“Doing this gives us a better understanding and greater appreciation of food, and provides us with fruit and vegetables that are affordable and more nutritious,” he says.

“If you know how hard it is to grow something, you’re less inclined to throw it away – millions of tonnes of food currently end up in our bins every year while at the same time there are millions starving. There’s something intrinsically unjust about this.

“Growing our own connects us with nature, and it’s a bit like magic

as well: putting a seed in the ground and growing it into a plant that gives you something.

“It’s great for our mental health and can help keep us fit too.”

Both gardening and cooking come together at the Malvern Autumn Show, held on the showground where the counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire meet, and Chris says the intrinsic link between these activities and the tradition of enjoying a cup of tea and slice of cake is one of the things that makes Britain great.

“We will be celebrating the wonderful world of baking, with some of the stars of the Great British Bake Off.

“Setting up a kitchen in the middle of a field means there’s always the potential for things to go wrong – that’s all part and parcel of it; there’s something reassuring and relatable in that one of our favourite bakers may not always get it right.

“It’s not always perfect, but in a way it makes it perfect.

“We will be trying to make everything informative, relaxed and entertaining, hopefully passing on a bit of knowledge and a lot of inspiration.”
